Log splitters are a handy dandy machine. My parents has owned two,..one that was powered by a tractor (sold it) the other is just a gas engine type. I don't know much about different ones,..but a good search on the net should tell you all you need to know. Both of theirs was bought at a tractor and equipment place.

Yes they are hydraulic...hand pumped...but it would take you all day...an axe would be alot faster than a manual hydraulic woodsplitter...this is from my DH...who is a hydraulic specialist:>)

I have used the hand operated hydraulic splitters, and they are indeed slow. However, if you are not physically able to split by hand, they are good to have around. You can get them from a lot of hardware stores. I know that Harbor Freight and Northern Tools & Equipment have them and they are reasonably priced.

I know you don't like electric but i love mine, just place the wood in there and pull the lever, done, on to the next log. It's way quieter than the gas powered ones as well. You can get a good one for around 300 dollars and they last forever.

We have both an electric splitter and a gas motor powered splitter. The electric splitter is good for small logs or splitting pieces that have ot been split small enough. They will not split logs of any size. We got a load of tree length logs last spring. They logs were much larger in diameter (18 inch to 30 inch) than we were expecting. We landed up purchaseing a gas powered splitter that had 30 ton of power in the ram. We got it off Craigs List for $600 from a guy who was going out of the wood business because of a "bad ticker". It splits these logs "Like Buttah". It will split a 20 inch length with a diameter of 30 inches without any hesitation. In a SHTF type scenario it would be good to put plenty of wood away before we ran out of gas. It uses very little gas to run it! We have split 3+ Cord of wood so far and have used much less than 2 gallon of gas. We still have at least that much to go.
