I'm wondering also, if maybe a 100 watt bulb might be enough heat for those babies tonight if it's that hot there.

Sucks. Do you have a thermometer you can put on the side of your brooder at their level so it's easier to monitor the temp?
 
Bees and ducks are added to my list of I Wants.

I spend way too much time here and I like it.

I love my indian runners....I am getting out of the chocolates though and going with just the blacks. There is a higher demand for them in my area. When I had babies last year people bought the black ones as fast as I could get them out of the crate.

I wanted to get them from holderreads but I figured that it would be easier on the birds if I got them from closer to the east coast and since I've had good luck with Meyer before I went with them.

I have a regular bulb in the heat lamp, I always use a regular bulb. I think the one I have in there is either a 100 watt or a 75 watt. That usually puts off enough heat for the little buggers. I'm getting ready to go milk Aliana and I'm gonna go check on them again to see how they are doing with the new wall and the fan and the addition of the electrolytes. I usually don't do babies in the heat for this reason. :/
 
geez will it ever end...I just found ANOTHER dead mallard. That brings me up to 6. They are definitely getting a call in the morning. I have the fan down inside the brooder and the rest look pretty lively but then you have the occasional one that will lay down and look woozy but then they do that when they fall asleep.

The ones I saw die just started tripping and couldn't walk and then flopped over on their backs and then looked like they had a seizure, their legs got really straightened out and their feet went flat forward and then they just died. I'm hoping it is heat and not something else.

So sorry to hear about your ducklings. I guess I never thought about them being too hot- I thought I needed to worry about them being cold. Maybe that's just in New England.
 
Okay, I just got the kids in bed....this is gonna be a looooooong weekend without hubby.

I don't know what is up with the ducks. They haven't had a lot to drink (about 1/4 of a 1 gallon waterer over the course of the day) and the last time I peeked in on them they were settling in away from the fan. I keep waking them up to make sure they are all alive.

I have a 60 watt bulb in the heat lamp to give some heat but not a lot since the temps tonight are supposed to be in the 70s but I haven't turned it on yet.

While I was outside I milked Aliana, got her milk put away, gathered eggs, mowed the chicken pasture, came back in and brushed the kids teeth, read 2 stories, sang songs to both and talked to hubby.

We skipped baths tonight since we'll go to the pool tomorrow after the garage door goes in. Does that make me a horrible mother or just a more efficient one? :P

It is getting dark so I am gonna go lock down the birds and the goats and check on the ducklings again and hook up the heat lamp, I guess.
