Don't ask me how I know these. I memorized them when I was 12 years old. "A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent." Yes I was a Boy Scout too! To bad that it isn't considered to be P.C. anymore~gd

I was brought up believing these were the things that were expected of all of us. But if you notice, trustworthy is at the top of the list.
Those (overall) are the qualities of a good neighbor or citizen. I agree with them, almost entirely - in the context of neighborliness. Some people would question whether unyielding obedience is always the best attitude for an adult. (Endless debates can stem from that one!)

As a friend to people, I expect helpful, friendly, kind, and cheerful of myself - and tend to expect it, also, of those I'd call 'my friend'.

Where does sisu come in, then?

I've always felt that the most important social characteristic is the underlying message in almost all religions.... "Play Nice"

That accords well with the Boy Scout virtues.

I think sisu is a characteristic or virtue that has to do with "getting things done" or "making progress".

By the way, I didn't bring up the word sisu and start the thread because I thought it was the most important human virtue or characteristic - just that I thought it was likely a quality needed for a person or family to do well with homesteading of any sort.

Sisu
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search For other uses, see Sisu (disambiguation).

Monument to the Finnish Sisu" on a fell in LaplandSisu is a Finnish term loosely translated into English as strength of will, determination, perseverance, and acting rationally in the face of adversity. However, the word is widely considered to lack a proper translation into any other language. Sisu has been described as being integral to understanding Finnish culture. However sisu is defined by a long-term element in it; it is not momentary courage, but the ability to sustain an action against the odds. Deciding on a course of action and then sticking to that decision against repeated failures is sisu. It is similar to equanimity, except the forbearance of sisu has a grimmer quality of stress management than the latter. The noun sisu is related to the adjective sisukas, one having the quality of sisu.

Sounds good to me! :)

These are the characteristics I PERSONALLY BELIEVE IN and will continue to do so regardless of whether they are PC or NOT.

Frankly, being P.C. is at the very bottom of any social or moral considerations and I find the thought of it revolting. When one is considered "NOT P.C" that is communists speak for "they aren't conforming to what WE want them to say. For my money, PC all it stands for can go straight to the flames of H**l.
YMMV

You know those candles you can buy in glass jars with a picture of Jesus or the Virgin Mary, that you burn for protection and help? Well I found one in a gift shop that is supposed to protect you from the "Politically Correct". I haven't used it yet, but maybe it's time to break it out.

Thank you, but maybe we better wait till they start going after folks. I believe they will try! Then you'll need to light it 24/7

Who is "they"? I assume you mean the vaunted Bangladesh UN Shock Troops, pouring out of black helicopters, ready to zip-tie you and your family to a PC re-education camp somewhere in socialist-medicine paradise of Alberta? Or, did I twist my tinfoil hat to the wrong delusion?

Thought so. ;)

O, that's right. It can't happen here. It can't happen in this time. I'll bet the folks who survived the halocaust thought that too! But then I thought the PC camps were in Manitoba rather than Alberta. Better add some antennae to your hat...it will help with the reception.
