Aspartame also causes macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in this country. Usually a disease of the elderly. It was my diagnoses, at age 40, that propelled me forward in looking at my food.

hmm, i didn't know about that connection. my grandfather is almost completely blind from macular degeneration and my optometrist is already concerned about it for me... and i'm only 27. the chances of developing MD, with a family history, are 50%- not good odds. but i've been trying to avoid aspartame for quite a while anyway, so this is just another incentive.

my mom keeps buying Coke Zero even though i have told her time and time and time again that it's terrible. i bet when i tell her that aspartame is connected to MD that she'll finally get the point (it's her father that's blind).

I have (had ) 17 aunts and uncles, not including spouses, and 72 first cousins and NO macular degeneration in the family. Hmmm.... I was a Diet Coke-aholic for many years. The stuff is poison.
