Mudbug Fishing

Granddaughter fishing for mudbugs in the front yard. The crawdad, kept grabbing the price of bacon, but she couldn't pull it out of the hole. She fished that mudbug for a good 1/2 hour, with my pocket fisherman

I have never seen a mud bug hole like that before, pretty neat.

How deep do they tunnel, how big are they? Are they the same species of cray fish found in the lakes? Can you help her out with a spade? Are they good eating? Do you need to do any special prep before cooking them?

The real name is the Digger Crayfish (Fallicambarus fodiens) but we call them Mudbugs, they can be pretty large for a Crayfish. And yes if you can get a mess of them they are good to eat.

it's a primary burrowing Crayfish species that spends most of its life below ground. It is found across eastern and southern Illinois, but given its burrowing behavior, it is only occasionally encountered. The species digs a complex system of tunnels and chambers in low lying floodplain regions.

They really like bacon, don't ask me how I know this
