Aw, sorry the therapy dog didn't work out! Perhaps a song with hand motions for the meltdowns? If you choose an animal, I'd second the fish therapy, as well as the rats, they ARE very sweet and intelligent animals. I've only had female rats growing up. I've "heard" that males can be more agressive, but I have not had any experience with this. Don't worry too much about selling the dog, you are doing the right thing there, and reimbursing those who helped, there really is no reason for anyone to be upset! I hope you know you are not dumb, you were trying to find a way to help your son, and that shows what an awesome parent you are.
 
That puppy doesn't sound like it was a very good example of puppy in general. i had a chocloate poodle that was like that last spring, and it didn't last long with me either. It was not a good fit with your family, period. Not all puppies are that bad though, but the odd one is:) Hope you find something that works for your son, but maybe he is generally not a pet kind of person. Music? SWIMMING worked really well with my son, he just loved the water and it was very theraputic for him, I think he was at his best in the water actually. Maybe try that.
 
Would LOVE to swim ... he used to swim a lot. But now the closest pool is about a 25 minute drive, besides that the neurologist won't clear him to swim until he's been seizure free for 3 months. Wally World has above-ground pools for $229 but right now money is really tight with all the supplies we bought for the puppy (kennel, food, toys, vet, etc) and with Hubby driving 2 states away twice in the last month for his father.

JUst got an e-mail from trainer. She's kinda ticked that we're not gonna stick with this puppy that it took her a month to find. Sending an invoice to us this week. Hope she'll let us pay a little bit at a time. Especially if Social Security really does get cut off because of our wonderful government.

Ever gone weeks and weeks without a good solid night of sleep? I have. For almost 6 years now. It's catching up with me. Maybe that's why things are getting so very difficult to handle. Maybe if I could sleep, my son would be easier to deal with.
 
There's no one who could handle your son for a weekend so you could get a break?
 
Not really. Hubby's mother doesn't like him (actually told my Hubby that and can't believe he actually told me!). She thinks he is just a horrible child who could control himself if he tried. We can't really go over there any more. She hates that he rearranges things to line up (he's also OCD). She's probably a big portion of why Hubby doesn't understand my son and why we fight all the time about him.

Anyway ... a nearby friend would take him except her daughter has cerebal palsy and has her hands full. Same with another friend. No relatives nearby ... thought about sending him to my dad in KY for a weekend but he'd spoil my son, feeding him things that set off his meltdowns, then never want to have him over again.

I really really wish there was.
 
Are you part of a support group for parents of autistic children? Or something along those lines? I'd definately look into it if not, they may have some really helpfuls suggestions!
 
Good idea. Will look into that.

Just talked with my dad. He and my stepmom had discussed flying him out there but since my kid is a little claustrophobic, doesn't like loud noises, hates crowds and has never flown, that's out. He also reminded me that my son had an incident several years ago, involving a dog. Great. Wish I would have remembered.
 
Alright already! How can anyone look at this little puppy's cute white face with black eyes and black nose, watch him chew his tail, and coldheartedly decide to sell him?

Okay, I still have to talk with hubby but maybe, just maybe, we can keep the puppy. Maybe if we tell my kid that the only responsibility he'll have with the puppy is walking and to help ME train him, then he will look at he less resentfully. The barking is already starting to lower, and become less frequent (at least at night). He doesn't have many accidents in the house. He does still like to lick but I think it's mostly sweat. And I figured out why the puppy is getting up at night: the roosters crowing at 2:30, 3:45, 4:15 ... are waking him up and telling him to get crackin'!!

In an effort to need less money, I think (after I talk with hubby) contact the trainer and have her come only once a month instead of once a week. Then, once Krypto is out of his barky licky pee-everywhere stage, we'll transfer his affections more to my son.

MAYBE.

We'll have to discuss at length but the way hubby was cuddling the puppy last night, perhaps he needs the pup as much, especially with everything he's going through.

Meanwhile, I'm burning hot and can't stand this weather. Our garden has produced only a few tomatoes and blueberries. Started it too late. But now that we have a rototiller, NEXT year's will be different and amazing. Good, because I have a feeling we REALLY need to produce most of our food next year. That's another reason I'm looking into the paleo diet. Not that my family will go for it 100%. Try, at least. Right?
 
I hope the pup does work out for you. I know that when I finally get a puppy, I'm probably in for at least a week of asking myself why I did this.

And yes, you're allowed to change your mind-even if you weren't a woman. People who never change their minds are boring.
