One of our 12 week old Americanas (my son's favorite named Delgado :hit ) was missing at roll call last night and I found her this morning under my tractor. She had been dead for many hours. I examined her and saw no signs of wound or blood. She did had quite a lot of poo near her rear-end but I expect that is just a result of the releasing of the bowels upon death.

Temperatures have been in the low 70's and my girls have plenty of shade as they free range all day. The others seem energetic and are eating well. After last year's battles with raccoons and the daily blood bathes we would encounter I am a little paranoid about loosing my whole flock again. Are there any signs or symptoms of disease we should be on the look out for in the rest of our flock? While I hate to do it....are there any preventative measures/medications I could administer to keep all the ladies in tip-top shape.

They are so close to laying ages I hate to lose all my hard work now!!

Raw ACV in the water is a good general tonic.

x2 and give them a little garlic on their food to deworm, and a little crushed pepper to help them when they start laying.

Sounds like your girl may have had a heart defect or something by finding the pile of poo. :hu Natural causes. Still sad :(

Crushed red pepper helps them lay better. I know there are a lot of nay sayers on that one, but I have tried it personally and it seems to work. I know pepper will thin the blood, so I figure that has some to do with how it helps, just don't know exactly how it does it, but it does seem to work when mine slow down some.

I don't know about fighting parasites, but it could be good for that as well. It works in the garden, why wouldn't it work internally for a chicken too? :hu

Hmmm very interesting. I've never done that. But, on the other hand, our chickens kind of live their own lives out there and we don't usually mess with diets.

Thanks everyone. I picked up 2 bottles of ACV while out today. I have a 1 gallon waterer...how much per gallon should I use? It was expensive and I don't want to go broke using it.

I did try to make my own ACV and it work out so well. Will have to try again.

We give ours kefir and kombucha for off and on everyday, and for serious issues, they get drops of fermented cod liver oil.

Did you buy the gallon size? Much cheaper that way.
I think its just a glug as far as how much to use.
