Hmmmm...you are right; I just noticed that - no intake or exhaust....or do you need the intake if it is below ground?

Not sure but every cellar I've ever seen or used has a pipe out the top, so they must be pretty essential.

ventelation is needed so everything won't spoil. I think if it is mostly dirt that wouldn't be as much of a consideration but I know moisture is seen on concrete even inside of buildings that aren't underground.
