The History of 'APRONS'






I don't think our kids
know what an apron is.
The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing
hot pans from the oven.


It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.





From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.






When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids..






And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms.






Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow,
bent over the hot wood stove.







Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.






From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.
After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.






In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.





When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.






When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folks knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.


It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.






Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about Grandma's aprons.


REMEMBER:






Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill
to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.


I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron - but love...

I think it would be a fabulous insert on a nice piece of stationary every time I give an apron as a gift. Can I copy it? Is that allowed?

Oh, yay! So glad it fits! You know I obsessed about it and can tell you exactly where each mistake is! Yep, I got a great machine for $25 (separate from the base, which was more.) I'm so enjoying it! Working on fleece-filled pillows for our bed right now. They will probably take a month, too, or more!

Glad you found the other goodies, too. I am so happy you like it. You deserve something to enjoy every day and to feel pretty while doing chores.

But don't be afraid to use it as a potholder, hold poopy chicks in it, or carry dirty carrots up from the garden....or dust when company is coming up the driveway!

Did your mom know you were getting it, or was that totally a coincidence? If so, cooooool beans!

I just looked down and realized I'm still wearing my apron! I had it on when I was baking a little while ago. I've gotten so used to having one on this winter that I forget to take it off a lot. Someday I'm going to go to school with one on!

I'm trying to get into the habit of wearing my apron around the house. I'm so messy that my clothes get stained really fast if I don't.

I love wearing aprons for all those reasons and more. I have an apron I wear in the house and when I do farmwork I wear a different apron sometimes. That way the ourside poopy stuff doesn't get transfered to the kitchen stuff. If I carried a poopy chicken around or cleaned the goat pen and then come inside to cook dinner, I put my apron on and don't worry about getting feathers in the soup

I love that "History of aprons" I shall have to copy it and send it to my sis and mom.

I have a "garden" apron and two "house" aprons. That pretty much keeps yucky animal stuff away from my kitchen.
