My brother and SIL were up in Portland over the weekend, getting home yesterday. They discovered that Bob's Red Mill - http://www.bobsredmill.com/ - is only a few miles from where they were staying, so went to their big store. Brother was amazed at just how much they carry. He brought home a loaf of bread for us, for which I traded half a dozen fresh eggs. I knew that they were somewhere in Oregon, but had no idea that they are so close - well, actually 3 hours away, but good to know for the few times a year we go to Portland. Azure Standard is up that way as well, so we are nicely covered for grains, beans, and such.
 
Sad news today. I got home from doing some errands, and found my Barnevelder rooster dead on the grass, and a hawk guarding its kill. All his girls were accounted for though, though scared and hiding, so he did his job well.

His 8 month old son is now the Big Man on campus.

RIP Piet.
 
Yeah, I was really starting to like him a lot. A handsome boy, and, mostly, very good with the Girls. I hope his son, Antonio, grows out of his awkwardness into a nice fellow like his papa.
Everybody will be confined to the run for awhile now, until Mr Hawk moves on.

Not much happening here lately. Antonio, the young rooster, is trying to fill the vacuum left by his papa whenever all of them are let out onto the grass (not so often, nor for quite as long, as before), but the girls from the big coop (Piet's girls) don't want much to do with him - and let him know it! :D I have lined up a few possible places to get some fertile eggs when/if Beatrix decides to go broody again - which I hope she does, as it was so fun (and easy!) watching her do the work of raising the wee ones.

I discovered that my favorite pullover has a hole in it (could be darned, and probably will be, but would be very obvious), so will be relegated to the *at home only* clothes group, and have started knitting a new one. Not my own yarn :hit, I haven't got that far with spinning to have enough for a sweater.

My project for today or tomorrow is to tidy up the area in the garage where the grow lights are, and start some seed flats. Onions, leeks etc., and celery root can be started now. And I think I will start some globe artichokes too, though I really have no idea yet where to plant them. I was so surprised a year or two ago to find that artichokes will grow (and survive!) here; I thought that I had left *really fresh* artichokes behind me when we left California.

I also want to make up some cream of mushroom soup base to can, either this afternoon or tomorrow.
 
Cream of mushroom soup sounds perfecto. It is a bit overcast today and creamy hot soup would be wonderful. What kind of mushrooms do you use? "back home" we used to gather morels , boletus and what we called cauliflower and calf's brains mushrooms. The morels... Oh how I miss them. My mother would dredge them in flour and fry them up in butter. Incredible stuff!
So you knit huh? I like that. And spinning. Also on my wish list.
I had beans and brown rice for lunch, topped with fresh salsa. It was good. My tummy is full enough but my mind wants more food, something richer. Something like, oh say...cream of mushroom soup!
