Pears?? Tell me how to use them, so I will like them.

OK, so I have the opportunity to get free pears. They are not my favorite fruit..but was wondering...does anyone have recipes, canning or otherwise...for PEARS!?
 
I was never a huge fan of pears, until we lived in a two-family house with a pear tree......free stuff....gotta find a use for it!

Pear-raspberry pie!!!!!! Oh, so good! Not having raspberries, I would use one bag of frozen raspberries and as many pears as it takes to fill a pie to overflowing. If the pears are very sweet, you may not even need any sweetener. A little cornstarch is good, though, so it doesn't get too watery. I would dice the pears up to match the raspberries, but you can also slice them like you would apples for pie.

That's it. Two crust pie and bake like you normally would. I even buy pears for this, I like it so much. You can also do the same thing and make a cobbler or a crisp if you don't feel like messing with a pie crust.
 
Hmm, pear cobbler....now thats something I might have to try. I like almost ANYTHING in a cobbler! Thanks!!!:D
 
My mother always cans pears,..I myself never have cared for them canned or fresh,...but she dices them up and packs them in a light syrup. She uses them to add to fruit salads. I never could get passed the texture of a pear, but freemotions idea mixing them with raspberries,.YUM! Anything with raspberries has to be good! It would make an excellent crisp.
 
Do you know what type they are?

Growing up we had pears as hard as rocks that were good canned only. :sick

Now, here we have bosk and another type, the small purple ones. When you eat them, they are so juicy and scrumptious!! :drool Love them raw.

Juice them, the juice is refreshing to drink!
 
My pear tree gave me about 75 pounds of pears last year. I peeled some and placed them in water with "Fruit Fresh" once I had peeled enough to put into jars I jared them up with a light syrup and processed them according to the Ball Blue Book. I also made Pear Mince Meat (internet recipe) and Pear Butter ( like Apple Butter). All were delicious!
 
I agree w/ Sally.. Pear juice! I love pear juice. If its really really sweet you can also add juice from canned olives in it, its good that was too. Same with home made lemon-aid thats too sour.

Our pear tree is about.. a foot high since my niece broke it off at the trunk. But I wait patiently for pears...
 
I love fresh picked ripe pears. A wonderful summer dessert is fresh fruit with cheese. But for preserves, I like this recipe from the Ball Blue Book

Pear Preserves

3 cups sugar, divided
3 cups water
6 medium cored, pared, hard, ripe pears, cut in halves or quarters (about 2 pounds)
1/2 cup thinly sliced lemon (about 1 medium)

Combine 1 1/2 cups sugar and water in a large sauce pot. Cook rapidly 2 minutes.

Add pears and boil gently for 15 minutes.

Add remaining sugar and lemon, stirring until sugar dissolves.

Cook rapidly until fruit is transparent, about 25 minutes. Cover and let stand 12 to 24 hours in a cool place.

Pack fruit into hot jars, leaving 1/4 inch head space.

Cook syrup 3 to 5 minutes, or longer if too thin. Pour hot over fruit, leaving 1/4 inch head space.

Adjust caps. Process 20 minutes in boiling water bath.

Yield: about 5 half pints.

Note:
If Seckel pears are used, preserve whole with stem intact.

Kiefers should be stored in a cool, cry place from 3 to 5 weeks before using.

A piece of preserved ginger may be added to each jar.
 
I make pear sauce-same way applesauce is made.
Cut up into chunks, cook with a little water until mushy and strain. I can into jelly jars for 2 person servings. I like my fruit plain but feel free to add sugar and cinnamon.

Pears and blue cheese salad. Heavenly combination.

Chilled pear soup- same as pear sauce but add cream and chill.

Pear wine is one of the highest alcohol content fruit wines.

Pear jelly from the pear juice.
 
Pear jam is really, really good. The pectin box insert will have a recipe.

Also you can cut it in chunks with an equal quantity of apple, add some ginger and lemons, and make a super good pear-apple-ginger 'marmalade'.

Pear sauce (made like applesauce) or pear butter (cooked down, maybe lightly spiced) are really good too if you have Bartlett type pears but do not come out so well with very stony (gritty) varieties of pear.
