Pop music!! What gives with the lude lyrics??? RANT warning.

Some of my favorite songs when I was younger,

Spam, spam, spam, spam

and a ton of others that I can't recall now. I wasn't allowed to listen to the Dr. Demento show, therefore, I did.

These modern pop songs are just bad in every way. I mean first of all, the lyrics just bite, period...second graders could write them, well, the raunchy ones that is. At least the older songs mentioned here have an artistic/witty/poetic/smart quality, that also had double meanings. (One for the naive kids (like I was) and one for the street smart kids.)

These new pop songs are SO formulaic and 99% of them are NOT written by the "artist" singing them. On top of that I think they are genetically modified by Disney to wormhole their way into your brain through your ears. Some of them I can't stop my brain from singing...especially when I can't sleep. On top of that they are just raunchy-bad.

(I love all other forms of music though, just not this, oh and new country.)

I have to admit that the kiddo and I were belting out Pink on the way to the store yesterday. Personally I really can't stand most of the newer stuff and with a few exceptions neither can my kids. Thank the gods that they never got into Beiber. Most of the music My girls and I listen to are pagan/folk. There is nothing more awesome than two girls singing songs about ningas, pirates and salads of doom!

You know, I am a teacher of middle school kids. Not a whole lot surprises me, especially since I teach kids with emotional disabilities. But I did a survey last week. I teach all boys this year, and they don't hear me when I tell them that there are ways you should and shouldn't treat the girls. So I decided to let the girls themselves teach. I gave the girls (25 in all, 6,7, and 8th grades) a survey to ask about stuff. They loved being able to "educate" the boys anonymously.

But I was seriously ticked about one thing. I asked the question: "If you are going with a guy and he gets all possessive and jealous, is that attractive, or creepy?" All the 6th and 7th graders said, "Majorly creepy!" But ALL my 8th graders said it was attractive.

We can talk all we want about "I never listen to the lyrics, it's the beat that counts," but I bet that all of us remember the lyrics even after 20 years. Whether we accept it or not, the lyrics get drummed into our brains, and they affect us. These 8th graders are preparing to go into high school. They're trying to be "big girls" now, and this is what happens. It is really sad.

I tend to agree with raro. Compare society from the 1950's and the music of the time, with society today and the current fare on radio.

Is music just a reflection of popular culture? Probably. I can't help but feel though, that negative lyrics serve to reinforce negative behavior. When you look at so much of today's music glorifying drugs, violence, and other destructive behavior, it makes you wonder where we are headed as a society.

I think a more important factor than the music, is parents' reaction to it. Like most of us have mentioned, we grew up listening to some pretty bad stuff. Personally, I loved Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, and Guns & Roses. Not exactly positive music.... But my parents were there to be good role models & teach me how to make smart choices. As a result, the music was just something I listened to, not something I actually believed. I think a major problem nowadays is not the music, but the fact that many parents are pretty much absent from their kids' lives, except to buy them stuff when they want it. Or they're just absent working several jobs to make ends meet. Or they just want to be their kids' friend. If you don't have good role models in real life, your role models will become musicians, actors, reality TV stars, etc.

I tend to agree with this, alot. I had a decent upbringing, and still listen to this kind of music. However, I am not, nor have I ever, going to do drugs or run out and rape an innocent, or shoot up a playground or run for political office. Besides, even I don't listen to the music when it starts getting heavily into drug use, or beatings, or shootings, etc. I like my music with a good beat and rythym, not with killings and maimings
