Welcome from central Kansas!

I use liquid, but here are the powdered recipes that I had saved:

2 cups Fels Naptha or Zote Soap (finely grated)
1 cup Washing Soda
1 cup Borax

Mix well and store in an airtight plastic container.
Use 2 tablespoons per full load.
_______________

12 cups Borax
8 cups Baking Soda
8 cups Washing Soda
8 cups Bar soap (grated)

Mix all ingredients well and store in a sealed tub.
Use 1/8 cup of powder per full load.

I remember reading here that one of the gals lets her soap shavings dry and then puts it in the blender for a bit to get it more powdered.

I hate the liquid- I use dry in my HE front loader. It works fine.

1 bar Fels Naptha grated
2cups Borax
2 cups Washing Soda
1 cup all purpose dry bleach

I use 1/4 cup in my front loader. A top loader may need more.

I LOVE the liquid but dont like storing 5 gallon recycled milk jugs of it in my small laundry room. I made a "Paste/Gel" version of it. I use my usual recipe but reduce the water total to just under 1 gallon total. I make sure to mix it a LOT while it cools. Once it is cooled, it stays mixed for the most part, with only little spots of liquid that are easily stirred into it. I even leave the measuring spoon sticking into it without the handle getting messy. I DO add Oxiclean and Dollar store Color Safe Bleach, and 1/2 cup of Dawn to my own detergent. But I only have to use 1 Tablespoon of detergent. I dont know how long it lasts since I've given so much of it away for others to try.

Concentrated Homemade Laundry Detergent
Makes approx. 1 gallon of a Concentrated Gel
1 bar Grated Fels Naptha
1 cup Washing Soda
1 cup Borax
Approx. 15 cups of hot Tap Water (total)
Heat 6 cups water, melting the soap in the heated water.
After the soap melts, stir in the other ingredients into the soapy water.
Mix thoroughly.
Pour into a 1 gallon container that already has the remaining 9 cups of hot tap water (one with a wide mouth so you can stir it, once in a while, as it cools for 24 hours)
Stir again thoroughly (Ive never stirred too much).
Cover and set aside until the next day (it wont hurt to stir occasionally while it cools)
Stir yet again thoroughly the next dayit will be thicka paste/gel
IF you have a Stick Blender, mix with that. Take out and mix in a smaller container if needed.
I use only 1 Tablespoon for my Top Load washer (1-1/2 Tablespoons for heavily soiled loads).you can always add more if needed.

Options you can add: Oxyclean, Color Safe Bleach, Dawn

I think that is the same thing as Color Safe Bleach, which comes in liquid or dry form. Clorox2 is a name brand. Dollar stores sell generic versions for around $1 for 26 ounces here, like Family Dollar.

The recipe I have used for several months is

1 box borax
1 box washing soda
1/2 bar of grated Fels Napha

Mix together, use 1/2 a laundry scoopful for large washer load.

I have added powdered bleach or biz to some batches but decided to just use the basic and use an additive only on an as need basis.

That paste/gel is interesting. I never thought about adding Dawn to the mix, either!

Okay Newbie's, don't forget to introduce yourself over at the 'where am I' part of the forum.

And welcome to SS!

I read about using Dawn in homemade detergent elsewhere online. If it is safe enough to use to clean up animals from oil slicks, surely it has some grease fighting abilities.

It doesn't make my detergent suds up either. I've been using the paste/gel since early April, and so far, so good.
