Have you ever charged to process someones chickens? If so, how much did you charge? There is a big demand for people to do this in my area, and I want to post an add but don't know what to charge.

I'd check out the laws. I think you have to have certification of some sort to do this for pay. I'm not sure on all of it, but I believe it's a bit more complicated than just going and slaughtering for folks.

Actually, in most areas one can slaughter on private farms without any certifications of any kind. As long as the meat is not for resale, it should be legal in most states.

Yeah...I think Salatin fought a battle about his own processing and finally won. They were on him about selling his meats when not processed at a USDA inspected processor but I think he finally won that case. Since then, of course, he and another fellow just bought their own abattoir and can now process without any hassles.

Don't know where you live but, yea, I would check out laws in your area. You may get around it by offering to "help out" on their property or yours for a donation. However some areas don't allow butchering at all.

We wanted to just rent a chicken plucker but no one around here rents them. My son is now making one and I'm trying to find out the ins and outs of renting it out.

Good Luck!

i too wouldbe carefull, as far as i know in MOST states you can sell LIVE chickens, you can butcher chickens BUT without special inspectio you cant sell butcherd chickens...
most people get around this by sellng live chickens and butchering "for free" (they add the cost to the cost per chicken though)

We have an Amish family that does ours. They used to charge $3.25 a bird...But last year $2 as I work in a Labor and Delivery unit and have helped them: with difficult deliveries and they have become friends. Good people. I do not think I would do it for $5!:drool
