I've been decluttering my room and packing up things to take with me when I leave. I'm only taking the things that I'd need or really want and cannot do without.
Last night I was going through my books. I have about 300-400 in my room, many of which are really good books that I enjoyed. I looked at a book and thought 'Gosh, I liked that book, what if, for some reason, i need to reference back to it?' But then I have to stop and think to myself - In a month, would I even remember this book? No. So it goes in a stack.
I currently have three bags and three boxes of items (mostly books, I admit) that I am taking with. Anything I leave here can be sold, trashed, or given away.
My mom is the same as you Denise. As a kid she moved about 30 times and they were always poor, so having items that she is familiar with makes her feel safer and gives her comfort, especially if they can serve her a purpose.
My dad however, keeps items around for the reasoning that 'it might be an antique someday!, which really, you could say about anything. But he thinks someday someone might want it and will pay an outrageous price for it. It need not matter to him if it doesn't work/is ugly/outdated/no one wants it/etc.
There's a quote, something about "reduce, reuse, recycle, repair, make it over, make do, or do without."
