Saw the pictures on page 69. I'm jealous. I want chickens. Was that a buff Orp in there, or a different buff chickie? I want buff orps really bad. Handsome turkey and goat too.

Yes, that was a buff Orp. I have six buff orps..One roo named Pocket and five hens.

Buff Orps aren't my chicken of choice I only got them because I was told they are excellent layers.

Do you find them to be excellent layers?

We only have one Buff Orp (Betty), and she lays an egg about once every couple of weeks in winter and about 3 or 4 a week in warmer weather.

We were told this breed is known for being broody, but Betty has never gone broody... she will be 3 years old in June.

eta: our Jersey Black Giant lays more year round and is notoriously broody.

I am glad you survived your city trip. You have every right to be scared. My hubby used to work second shift at his city job - he got off at 2 AM. He saw a knife fight, a nude man being chased by another man with a club, a couple of shootings and they even tried to stop his car a couple of times (to which he replied by aiming to run them over). I was SO glad when he finally got on days!

The odd thing is we love to camp in the wilds, two years ago it was me hubby and one other family smack dab in the middle of 15000 acres of grass (Cimarron National Grasslands). People kept telling me how terrified they would have been - way out in the lonesome like that. Were there coyotes and animals? How can you stand it?

The same stupid people LOVE to go shopping and out for "night life" in our big city and show no fear.

I know I am far safer (man eating coyotes and all!) than those folks are. Nothing on earth wants to kill you or cause you more pain and problems than another person.

About the chicks

Do I understand right - the replacements are all RIR? Isn't that what your DH wanted to keep?

So far only 2 of my BO's are laying, but the two that are laying give up an egg everyday.

I figure I will give them all until warm weather, and which ever hens are not laying will either become dinner, or go to the auction. I have one BO hen who acts broodish before laying an egg, but they are only a year old, so I've not had any broodies yet!

Isn't that something??? I feel much safer out in No Man's Land, too. I had a friend once ask, "How can you stand living in BFE?" My reply? "Because I like waking up in the mornings!"

About the chicks

Yes, they are what he wanted to keep! But I've sold 82 of the replacements as of today!!

I might let him keep a few. I did put 5 RIR's on my McMurray order for him, 4 hens and 1 Roo. He's pretty pleased.

He can keep the RIRs - I personally don't like them.

All of the ones I have had seem to have nasty personalities - then again I had production line birds and not many of those.

My favorites are the Ameraucanas.

I'm more into the Cochins and Speckled Sussex and my Blue Laced Red Wyandottes....and I am hoping to have NHR and BBS Orps soon!

I don't care for RIR's either. Our roo got mean and starting attacking....so no more RIR's for us!

I like RIRs! The one's I've had were very nice and quirky...which I like! Even Sue, our roo, has only tried the roo dance on me once and tried to peck me once.....and, in his defense, he was trying to protect his girls from the big, bad human at the time. AND, what is even better, he learned to never do it again with only one correction....I call that smart!

Unfortunately, he has been supplanted as Cock of the Walk by big ol' Thunderbuns, Sweet Lou! I'm threatening to rename him General Woundwort! :/
