Quail_Antwerp: Words from the Barnyard...

I never have understood the amount of laziness involved in creating a farm like that. It amazes me how many of them there are around.
I can't understand it either. We are constantly cleaning, picking up, removing, cutting out something. Winter kind of sets us back, but each spring we start on a new area and clean clean clean. We continue working and cleaning while maintaining what we've already cleaned all summer long into the fall.

When my parents come to visit we literally spend days picking up the trash they leave behind...and they might only have been here an hour! They are always carrying drinks of some sort and they can't be bothered to put the cups in the trash, so we either find their styrofoam cups, or pop bottles, etc scattered around outside or in my kitchen. :barnie

Anyway, we some progress today. Kind of got rained in, so we had to stop again and it ended up being for the day due to Nascar race the hubby wants to watch.

Here are some photos from after we started clean up. Still doesn't look like much, but we can see the difference.

The white and black thing in back off to the right was a bucket of coal. I moved it out after I took these pics.

We decided to do a quickie coop for now. I have the wire for the run, just not the lumber for the building yet. We've decided to utilize the kids old playhouse again. The play house will serve as a temporary coop for the BLRW. When they start earning their keep (laying eggs) I plan to sell hatching eggs from them. I told DH I can buy the posts I'll need and the lumber from egg sales. We'll save back the $ from egg sales to purchase the necessary supplies. Might take a few months, but it will be worth it!

:frow Hello, still getting around and meeting folks.

As any newbie should do, I have been doing a lot of reading on everyones journals. Kind of way of getting to know folks before I post and say hello.

I was reading the story of your ride in the city with your mom to pick up your chicks.

Living out here for the last almost four years now, has really change my life and view of the life I use to live in the city. I returned back to the area where I lived to pick up a few loose ends and visit with my mentor.

I was shocked to see how much had changed, but also, the hussle and bussle was scary. When we went out for dinner, the people looked stressed all the time. Everybody was running around getting their own thing done, never seemed to slow down and look around.

Aly, I can sympathize with you on the clean up. When we moved back on the old abandoned farm when I was 11 yr. old, it had about 25-30 junk cars, literally thousands of old tires, old farm dumps, mangled old fencing, etc. Not to mention a multiflora rose field in the six acres around the cabin site. I was pleased to see you utilizing little hands! They will be so proud down the years when they remember how much they contributed towards making your place neat and usable. I know I was.

Within a few years or so, we had the place looking like a golf course, so don't get disheartened when it seems as if you'll never get done. We didn't have any equipment except an old '48 Case tractor, a chainsaw, and numerous brush hooks.....and our hands!

I found much more satisfaction in taking something rough and making it pretty than buying something pretty and sitting around wondering what to do next.

It looks great, BTW!!! :thumbsup

Well I can CERTAINLY see the difference. Great work! I wish we had taken more Before and After photos of my sissies mess.

It gives you a wonderful warm feeling to make a clean sweep like that!

Keep on Keeping on.... Someday your place will be a show place!

QA, you had quite a productive day! It is getting there; hopefully we will get some more nice weather soon.

We didn't get much done yesterday, because of the downpour.

Looking good, keep it up...can't wait to see pics when everything is finished!

Oh, I envy you!! There are so many things I want to do outside this year, but we're still under 2 feet of snow with temps cold enough to annoy a penguin. I've been suffering such a huge case of cabin fever lately, thinking about all the stuff I want/need to do out there.

Didn't get much done around the farmstead today, as we had some errands to run.

When we got home, the lady who wants to purchase the pygmy goats called, wanted to know if she could bring her DH out. We said sure. Well, she also brought me a trio of rabbits! I traded her some silkies for them. We got 3 adults, 1 male, 2 females, and one of the females is already bred! Guess coop construction is going to be put on hold while we build two more rabbit hutches. I want to get them separated before she has her babies.

Made arrangements to deliver the goats to them on Saturday, since they are only a couple miles from us and they don't have a way to haul the goats.

We also discussed our plans for going to Meyers on the 24th. She, another mutual friend, and I all have orders in with Meyers with pick up scheduled. My DH is keeping all the kids (even the baby!) and it's going to be a girls day out...with lunch and everything! I am so excited that I can't wait!!

I am hoping when we get there that Meyer might have some turkey poults available for pickup. I like that they let the Tuesday customers shop from their extras!

How far is Meyers from your place?

Great progress on the clean up!
