Quail_Antwerp: Words from the Barnyard...

Quail....my son discovered some of my hens laying in my young hound's doghouse today! Talk about meals-on-wheels! He won't even have to try to steal from their nests anymore, they just deliver the eggs right to his door! :he This is a crazy ol' life, isn't it? :P
Our dog, Zoe, thinks any egg on the ground is fair game. She won't take them out of the nests or off the counter, but if a chicken lays one in the yard....gulp.

I would be afraid of the dog choking! Some of our egg shells can be very hard especially our duck eggs. sometimes they are almost impossible to crack!

When I was a kid we raised German Shepherd pups.

One evening my parents went out to eat and my mom brought home some LARGE beef rib bones for the dogs. She gave one to each just weaned pup figuring they could teeth on them fairly safely. One pup "Sampson" almost immediately swallowed the ENTIRE RIB BONE WHOLE! I guess he was not planning on sharing with another pup. Poor baby you could actually see the bone inside of him sticking out on each side of his little body. It was just unreal looking!

We immediately called the vet and he met us at the clinic. We were sure we would need emergency surgery on the pup. After long contemplation and a complete check the vet gave us some sage advice. "Don't poke him." He did not think there was a rupture and was fairly sure the bone would naturally digest. We had our doubts, but took the pup home to be isolated from his litter mates.

Mom announced if the pup lived we were keeping him for a guard dog. She said we would never have a lawsuit with him on guard. "He won't bite a burglar - he will swallow them whole!" Yes the pup digested the bone - it took a couple of weeks - and he grew up to be a fine 130 pound guard dog.

I wouldn't worry about choking on an egg.

We've not had the chance to go get the load of top soil from the Amish man yet, but I hope we will soon. Then I can plant my raised bed.

I have a picture for you, keljonma, so I'll email you in a bit. Elizabeth laid a nice pretty brown cackleberry yesterday, and I laid it next to a buff orp egg for a comparison shot. I don't think her eggs are as dark as they will be yet, but we'll see.
I would love to see pics of HRH Elizabeth and/or her egg!

Is she still up to her antics? (On the sly with Jett?) :gig

I'm not sure that she's still with Jett, as Jett paired off with one of the EE's, and I'm not too thrilled about that!

I'll send you the pic of her egg. I'll say this, it was delicious!

Good morning, dac! It's good to see you! :)
