Quail_Antwerp: Words from the Barnyard...

Got to think that your kids will be doing better without that level of tension in the home. They may not say anything but I'm sure its sinking in and it doesn't feel good.

I say....see how they do in the real world! Its time.

Hmmmm . . . What part of Tennessee? Should I be worried? :gig
*snork* I dunno...depends on how close to Knoxville you are! LOLOL

They made it to Tennessee. SIL talked to them this morning. They are at Niece's dad's right now, but they plan to move in with the BF's sister in Knoxville. I'm glad they made it.

House doesn't really feel different, other than SIL being down about her daughter leaving. Originally we had invited SIL and our nephew to come, but Niece and BF were being supportive of SIL, and she relied on them quite a bit, so we refused to deny her the right to have her support system with her. That's the only reason the two of them were permitted to come, too.

It means there's a bit more room now. We can spread everyone out a bit more. :)

Oh, Pam, niece is 22 and her BF is 24. By the time I was her age, DH and I were married, had our first house with a mortgage, 2 kids, were both working full time jobs, and had 2 car payments.

You and your husband showed great patience and generosity towards those kids. I think like others said before, they need to strike out on their ow n and learn their lessons. Some day they will understand and thank you.

By the way the puppies are just adorable, and the coop looks great. :)

I have BBS Orps in the 'bator, due to hatch tomorrow, but I had a temp spike yesterday to 113!!!!!!! I am not sure anything will hatch now. I managed to get the temp under control fairly quickly, which leads me to think it wasn't that high long, but I'm worried that it might have been long enough to cook them.

Worse, I suspect I had the temp spike because someone tampered with my incubator. :(

Today I have really been thinking on my chickens, and which breeds I really want to focus on. Right now I think I have about 20 different breeds, and I can't breed them all unless I want 20 coops and runs out there.

I'm going to pick my absolutely favorites to work with. Cochins, Marans, Speckled Sussex, Mille Fleurs, Quail Antwerps, Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, New Hampshire Reds, Black Australorps, and Black Sumatras. There are a few other "pets" I'll most likely keep, and then there are the few sex links I purchased for egg laying, and my Welsummer project...Other than that, I think I'll let the light brahmas, Buff Orpingtons, and Ameracaunas go. I'm still undecided, but I've been seriously thinking on it.

I don't plan to move any chickens out until the young ones I have coming up are laying. I don't want to cut myself short on eggs.

By the time I was 22 I had 3 kids, a morgage, a college degree....but no job! LOL!!
They way you talked about her and the way she acted I was thinking she was 16 or 17 years old.

I'm about 40 minutes south. :hide

People just don't bother to grow up these days.

When I was 22, I had one child two paid for (read cheap cars) saving for a house and had been married for 4 1/2 years!

Quail - you chicken addiction always makes me laugh! :D You sound SO much like me.

When I first got started with bantams I had some "focus" breeds - just a "few".

Cochins - white, black, buff, red, mottled

Old English Game - white, black, red pyle, red brown, crele

Black Rosecomb

Modern Game - white, red pyle, black brown, silver duckwing, birchen

AND

white call ducks!

These were my "focus" - in addition to meat birds - mixed breed egg birds and then my sister had a collection of Sebrights!

It was a little city of runs, coops and pens. Boy did we have fun!

Even now with my "City Biddies" I want a beautiful variety of top quality (well as good as they sell at hatcheries) biddies - preferably that lay each a different color egg! I don't ask much. :P

Right now we only have 3 breeds, red sex links, barred rocks and EEs, oh, and I forgot about Buddy! Japanese bantam. So that makes 4 but some day I hope to have 20 different "focus" breeds

I need to go look at your website again and see all your breed pics and refresh my memory!
