That's so funny - last night I was joking and said we could name our drakes - the Ducks of Hazzard - Bo and Luke Duck. The way they run around herding the females all over the yard and showing off, I thought the names were fitting

I couldn't help but laugh. I know it's not funny, but it sounds just like my luck! Nothing would sell for a good price except the one thing that I would have my eye on and it would go for a dollar over my spending limit. That has happened to me. Or the one day you decide to bring your baby ducks because last week they were going for $6 each everyone else brings theirs too and they end up with 50 of the little jokers and only one person bids on them. I know how you feel. I actually swore off auctions for a while because of stuff like that, but they are like a bad habit that is just so tempting!

There was a comment in the Wall Street Journal today positing that we are in the beginning stages of a once-per-century type economic depression. The author pointed out any number of economic and social indicators to prove his point: Longer lines for food pantries, people going door to door looking for work, homemakers learning the kinds of things we talk about here daily (and which I call Heritage Skills), and the 100% increase in use of thrift stores.

That's what you just did as well. Your experience is going to be commonplace soon, if it isn't already. In my instance, five years ago I was making 70% more per month than I am today. Like the lobster in the slowly heating pot, I have adapted. Unlike the lobster, I know what is happening and I am fighting against it.

What you have related is a terrible thing. Is there anything we can do to stop this trend? Absent that, what can we do to survive it?

Quail is there a small butcher shop near you all?

If so I would talk to those folks about your steer. I am sure they can find you a buyer for plenty more than 50 cents a pound!!

Another option is Craigslist. That is where I find most of mine.

Sell the dang thing somewhere else. I know in Mo. they get 1.00 a pound on the hoof. Here in Ca people sell for close to 3 bucks. It's simple supply and demand. It's spring, everyone's animals are producing.

So how about you look into shipping cost to Ca. Then tell me what you find.

The author of the comment disagreed that the way to pull out of a deficit-driven depression is to spend more. There were 750 comments at the time I read the one I quoted. That's why I didn't look for it...I am sure it is WAY down the list now.

Please accept my apology! I was not trying to be offensive in anyway, and I am very sorry that I exhibited poor taste and choice in wording. It was a lame attempt at a joke.

Ldychef, I'm not sure I'm totally understanding everything you are saying. I'm not completely daft, but I'm a little confused.

Farm and Gina, we plan to try selling them outright. We have seen grass fed beef advertised around here for $2.25 per lb. I'm happy to get $1 a pound, I'm not greedy. We just need to sell the two biggest steers to have the $ to move the new trailer in. We're not looking to get rich.

I'm telling you, it was so discouraging today, E wanted to sell off every cow and all the poultry, buy a rototiller and just plant the whole property in produce. Food is selling, top dollar.

Shoot. Dang cows are food, aren't they???

I wish we lived closer to you. I know tons of people here in LA who would pay very big money for beef like yours, me included. I guess that is part of the problem; getting the food to people like me who don't have access to it except in very pricey specialty stores.
