Quail_Antwerp: Words from the Barnyard...

We're down at the neighbor's getting our hair cuts - ok, E's getting his cut, I'm getting a trim. Court is next week, so we figured we'd look presentable....no sense going in looking like the hillbillies we are!

The dogs at large were fenced for a few days, but the word is that they were loose again today. Dern neighbors.

Buckeye Veal stopped out today and brought us the blank contract we need to turn into the mortgage company. The contract they presented to us is for loose housing. Pay is $3 per calf a week, with checks mailed every two weeks, plus if the calves meet the weight quota at the end of the growing season, we get a $4 per calf bonus check for the entire growing season. Then, we will also be paid 50% of the profits from the shipment of calves. So if profits are $30,000 (and that's probably a low number after what some of the Amish have told us they've made in profits) then we'd get a check for $15,000.

We figured that's decent and we can't complain!

I'm also considering adding Black Java chickens to my flock....because well, I found out that they are the second oldest chicken to originate in the US (the Dominique being the oldest) and they are HARD to find! Every hatchery i've talked to has mottle java's but not black - except Strombergs - so I'm thinking I may order....

I said I'm thinking!

lol

eta: oh, and I'm soooo over winter!

Order!! I'm living vicariously through you and your chickens/farm, my 9 little hens are as close as I can get :p

I also don't know if it posted, but Mcmurray has sebbies.

Hey girl :frow. Good to see ya here!

It sounds like you are on to something. How many head would you take on? Seems like this would be a good project I hope it goes smoothly :thumbsup

Good luck in court, be sure to keep us posted.
:hugs

Yikes.....I knew Holderreads was getting rid of their sebbie flock....just can't keep up with demand and need space for other breeds.

I love Javas...I think they are beautiful birds. I'm still trying to figure out if I'm going to order any chicks to raise up a bit and then sell once the swaps start up again. I just don't know how cost effective it would be. When you can buy chicks at $2 each at a swap would it really be worth it for me to buy a bunch and pay shipping and feed them for a couple weeks to make, maybe $1 per bird if I'm lucky? I know there are some breeds around here that people don't really have but I would have to find a really good deal on chicks to make it worth my while.

Court is coming fast but they said that if we have that big storm and roads are bad then it will be postponed, which we do not want. well today the weather showed that the storm is now predicted to go south of us. Dd is upset that she is missing two days of school because of this. It ruins her perfect attendance.

I did order some chicks, but not the Javas yet but those will be ordered, too, I think. I am getting salmon faverolles, bantam welsummers, and white orps.

I am definitely tired of snow and winter and freezing temps. We've been around 18 during the day and zero or colder at night. Plus we have about 4.5 inches of snow.

Just think, only 8 more days until February. And then only 28 days to March! Yes, we are counting down. I have to or go crazy!

8:17 here at the Branch Ranch and it is a sweltering -4 degrees.........
Just sayin' :D
