Quail_Antwerp: Words from the Barnyard...

Feeling the same way about spring here.....still fluctuating between 20s through 40s.... but the yard is full of redwing blackbirds and robins.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Look at what I got at Roger's!!!

I named her Layla. Thought she was a bottle baby - really did! Bought milk replacer, nipples, and started feeding her the bottle - I had to pry her mouth open to take it. She took 2 oz's the first night, 3 the next morning, and somehow over the course of the second day I got her up to 4 ounces 3x's a day, but by Sunday she completely refused the milk on me. Literally fought me on the bottle.

She's eating hay, goat feed, drinking water from a bowl, and eating grasses from the yard. I'm hoping she will be OK with refusing the milk!!

They sold her as a Boer doeling, but never said she was a bottle kid. There were a couple other kids that they announced "bottle baby" before auction, but not with her. She had a twin sister, but someone else got her.

We also got 18 Bourbon Red Turkey eggs and a pair of parakeets. :D

Aww, she's cute Aly. I don't know nuthin about bottle babies though. If she's eating hay and feed I'd guess she's alright.
So I've had 2 people totally flake on me about the buckling :barnie So he's still for sale. He will finish out the week here and then go stay at the breeder's with her bucks. It's too wet here for me to give him an area away from the does and he's been testing his manhood abilities alot.

Oh, Java! I'm so sorry!! I'd still come and get him, if I thought E would go for it. We actually rehomed the pygmy LaManchas, because we want BIG goats...I mean, those two gals barely met my knees! I want something that has an udder!

It's OK, I thought I'd let you know just in case you still needed one. If not, he will be fine up at the breeder's place.
From what you told me about the size of those little ones, I'd have rehomed them too. Probably not good for anything more than pets.

:love She is BEAUTIFUL!!! Can I ask what your intentions are for her?? PLEASE say milking...LOL I just couldn't eat her! Tooo cute!!!
I would say if she is eating feed and grasses...she is fine. Is she a pygmy or just a runt? OMGOsh..she is cute, I keep going back to look at her picture.. :love

Try whole milk from the store with vitamin D, and warm it to 103 F. Be sure to keep it warm all the way to the barn, too. Forget the replacer for now. It is a big shock to her system, the milk will be better, I think. Worth a try, anyways. She looks kinda young...sure is a cutie-pie, though!

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just monitor the "output" as long as she has plenty coming out she has been getting enough. Our little Malcolm did the exact same thing. He was auctioned off WITH his mamma and was very obviously NOT weaned. He took all of one bottle then just started eating hay, grass and some rolled oats each day. :idunno

He did great!

1. Yes, she has horn buds! Which I was happy for, because we don't disbud our goats here. Too many coyotes, and they need their horns for protection as adults!

2. I am guessing, by how she feels, she weighs about 15 pounds - I can carry her under one arm.

3. She will NOT be ate! She is a meat goat, but I'll be sure to try to milk her LOL later...we're hoping to get a boer billy or find a breeder who would uh service her in 18 months....

We're also hoping to add a couple Nubian gals to our herd - that's the goal, a mixed herd of boers and nubians because that meat cross is our local market right now. And I want milk.

4. She had better NOT be a pygmy!! She is a twin, and her twin sister was a bit bigger than her, so I'm hoping a runt who grows up to be a BIG GOAT! :D

Free and Farm, thanks for the advice! I'll try the milk, free! :D Last night before bed I checked on her and she was chomping down on her goat feed, and then took a long drink of water. This morning she was chewing on the hay in her barn.

Farm, so far the output has been good....pellet poos and lots of pee.
