Question about fencing for goats

We did 3-4 inch diameter 8ft wooden posts with 4x4 Red Brand goat fencing. Ours is pretty flat ground though and we are getting nigerians so we went with 48in fencing. If we need to we can always go back and run a single line of electric around the inside to keep them from leaning on it.

It kind of depends on what breed of goat you are going to get too....Nubians are a lot different from Pygmys, ya know

this will be for a dairy goat or two but not sure about what kind yet.
Well...I'll just jump in and say goats are like kit kats...you can't just have one. Or is that Reeses? Or chips? Any hoo....Goats do much better in pairs and since you don't yet have any I'd recommend getting two from the same farm. They'd feel much better about having a buddy they know in a new home.

And, heck, soon enough you'll have three..then eight.... :clap

Yep, I know that will happen already, :)

Thanks for the help everyone, you have given me a lot to think about and some direction.

I'll chime in...

We used 7 strands of high tensile wire w/ 3 hot. The wire heights are 6" 12" 18" 24" 30" 36" & 48" (12, 24, & 36" are hot) We used 8' wooden posts 6-8" dia at the gates and corners and 3" dia every 10'. The entire enclosure is ~ 1/2 acre and we divided it into 2 different lots. The entire job was about $1000-1200 and took just over a day to get it in and hang the gates.

We have Boers and a couple of Toggenburgs and they learn REAL fast about the hot wires, now they don't even bother getting close and I turn the unit off. I turn it on in the spring w/ the new kids and they get introduced, but it only takes 1-2 zaps and they learn too.

I think we went a little overboard, but I'd rather over build the first time, than have to redo it later, if ya know what I mean :-)

Have fun w/ the goats Haywood!!! they'll keep ya on your toes:-)
