my friend gave me a mother,

well I think it is a mother?

it was made (grown ) in mexico, where her family puts the mother in a jar of pineapple scraps topped with water

she called it "pineapple water",

she lets it set a day or two, it ferments, it tastes sort of like beer
this is when she likes to drink it

but she said you can keep the liquid much longer and the taste changes

so I am guessing this is a pineapple vinegar (we had a language barrier, so I am trying my best to understand)

anyhow my question for you is

does this mother need to go only in pineapple products or can I switch juices

second, should I be concerned that it was grown in mexico,
you know, how are bodies are used to our local waters, would a mother grown in Mexico, but used here for years, be a concern for my digestive system,
sorry if that is a dumb question....

what do you think?

third what is the proper care and feeding of a mother,

is it ok stored in the refrigerator, will it die if it is in there to long with out new juices,
does it need to breath?

thanks so much for your help!!

I am no expert at all, but what you are describing sounds like it could be a vinegar mother, or a kombucha scoby.

If it is a vinegar mother you can put a little chunk in the fridge and experiment with the rest of it. I had a balsamic vinegar mother in my fridge for a few months and it was fine.

I'm sorry I don't know about other juices, it does sound cool though, so please let us know how it turns out.
