I was doing some canning and had the lids and bands sitting in hot (not boiling) water. I didn't use all the lids. Can they be re-used or are they shot once they've been heated?

Yup, all you've done is temporarily soften the seal compound. As long as you didn't DO anything to it while it was softened it is still fine.

The reason not to reuse *used* lids is that the sealing compound gets 'dented' (look at one, you'll see what I mean) and doesn't always resoften well enough to reuse with a good tight seal. (You can certainly try; but expect a higher rate of failed seals and I'd only do it with high-acid and/or high-sugar things, myself)

Thanks guys! I'm really careful when canning and if there was any doubt whatsoever, they were getting tossed.

I have re-used processed canning lids - but never for canning. I use them on my jars of laundry soap and cleaning supplies.
