Rainwater collection/holding tank ideas

Reviving an old thread...

Anyone ever tried putting a gutter system on a fence?
I don't have gutters on the house (yet) and the only side of the barn that has them is also where the gate is to access the paddock - so adding collection tanks would narrow that alley way.

BUT - I have a very large chicken yard. Roughly 50' on each side with 6' tall posts about 8' apart.
I'm curious if there is any reason that I can't mount gutters on the posts and have them deliver water to a small series of drums - for watering the chickens, the garden and the cow.
.. And for flushing toilets in a power outage situation.

yeah... I realized that after I typed... a fence doesn't have anything for the water to flow OFF OF and into the gutter

So, is there room at the opposite end of the barn side with gutters? You could put it there, maybe? OR put a curve on the downspout & angle it to the other side of the barn? Doesn't take much angle to run the water.

If I were you I'd put gutters on your house... Even with little rainfall, you'd be amazed how much water you can collect off a roof. I lived on a farm in S.A. with my ex-DH, our son and another family of 4. We were entirely reliant on rainwater collection from the house's roof for ALL our household needs. We managed... Barely at times, but we managed!
