I posted an ad for some venison that's hogging up a bunch of freezer space. The boyfriend won't let me do raw for our dog, so I hoped that someone else could use it. Someone emailed me and wants it for a pregnant dog that they just rescued, but doesn't know much about it. I'm ill equipped to educate them on the matter, so I was wondering if anyone else had some good information or input to help this person. Thanks in advance guys!

If you give too much information, it will all be lost. Here are the most important 2 things:

1. Raw bone MUST be included. The diet should be about 25% bone. (If your meat is not bone-in, getting bone from a butcher is super cheap. Adding dry dog food to "supplement" the raw food DOES NOT WORK!)

2. Pregnant bitches MUST have carbohydrates. Well-cooked or fermented vegetables must be added. 1/4 cup per day is a good amount for a 50 pound dog.

Those are the two things that will result in dead puppies. After that, I'd point them to do their own research. I wouldn't want to make myself liable for their stupidity in how they feed their dog!

I have given raw dog food out - cleaned out the freezer twice. It all went to the same person. I just asked how much bone the dogs gets. Everything I had was 30 - 40% bone or whole prey, so I figured he couldn't screw his dog up too badly.

1) Cooked bones are potentially life-threatening.

2) Not including bone in the diet is potentially life-threatening.

I have 4 dogs all on a raw diet. Get the book "Raw Meaty Bones" it is very helpful. Also there are Yahoo forums on Raw feeding and lots of great info there.
My dogs have been on raw for 3 years and one since she was 6 weeks old. They are all in great shape and healthy. I can not even imagine going back to kibble as there is way too much Poo to clean up on kibble. YUK!

This is an educational site that can give you lots of info. I do not suppliment mine like she does...... but feed quite similar.

another good site

I feed my dogs raw meaty bones, muscle meat, organ meat (8-10%), anything from meat, to any wild game or fowl I can find, port, chicken buffalo....... I give out a variety. Even whole mackerel, trout, sardines and such. Now I have one dog who will only eat liver and fish if it is frozen. I also give out local honey at times (great for allergies) and also canned plain pumpkin. (with no sugar or additvies for pie)
It is a great probiotic, levels out there bowel movements and generally seems to help out my dogs and especially one of them. HOpe this info helps someone out.
