Hi there everyone

I am the new guy here, so let me say a bit about myself. I am a young lad from Poland, I made some bad choices in my life, but that is a completely different matter, maybe for some other time. I promised a woman I loved deeply, who passed away just a couple of moths ago in a car wreck, that I will get my ass back in collage and graduate bachelors and I intend to keep that promise. Some time ago, I used to be addicted to gambling, did that quite well actually to, I had some money squared away, however when Marta, that was her name, had the accident, there was literally nothing I didn't do to save her, I lied, I pleaded, I bribed. Sometimes God works in mysterious ways, I blew all my money away, trying to save her, I was quite literally left with a shirt on my back. She was a artistic-soul, a woman that changed me a lot, I know that maybe these are a bit strong words for a young boy basically as me, considering that I could in nearly all cases here be your son, but she did. She tough me how to lonok in a different way on nature, on people, and the world surrounding us, not only in terms of ME, MINE and MY, but also to respect mother earth, and the people walking it. She made me a better person. We were planning on starting a SS life somewhere together, that was OUR dream, not happening now, but I decided to fulfill my promise and dreams go back to collage, start either a permaculture farm over here in Poland to show everybody that you can grow good ecological food, or hop the big paddle and buy some land in the US, but we'll see about that later.

Hope you feel better soon! Chicken soup!

It is written as: $10,000. That will be tough to find unless it is very remote, and maybe forested. Probably Northern, too. Are you looking to live "off the grid?" Any place where you can find 8 acres for that price will probably have very low taxes! What are the winters like in Poland? How cold (Fahrenheit, please!) does it get and for how long?

I would love some recipes for meat dishes with lots of fat! Old-fashioned recipes! big_smile

Oh, and start a journal. Then you can write about anything you want (except politics...new ban here on that!) Although a lot of thread-hijacking goes on here, and no one seems to mind unless someone gets mean. Then we go all protective.....a good thing.
from another topic...
ok... my maths got somewhat crooked yesterday... I mean 10,000... where did that come from?:D I converted the numbers wrong, I meant 25,000 that is what a similar acreage of farm land without building permits around here in Poland costs, and that is a pain in the buttocks really(lack of building permits). So lets say for a nice and round number 30,000$ is that more likely? I mean I went through ebay, but it is just a strange thing, I am somewhat confused, maybe another day...

Yes it would be a off grid kind of living, I mean I would need the net, otherwise how would I communicate with such a lovely bunch such as you people ;)

well... winters around here. This year winter came BACK with it's full might and glory and we're having temperatures ranging anywhere from 0F to 15F during the day and about 17F to minus -4F at night.

Last couple of years (3-4) it was a lot warmer, around 25-40F and it lasted, from late October until late February/early March then it usually gets warmer to sprinkle some snow in April, but just a little bit. Most field works start shortly after first thaw.

Recipes surely will come soon enough. Of for some breakfast first.

Pozdrawiam ( Greetings)

For $30,000 here in Atlantic Canada you can buy about 100 acres of remote land... and by remote I mean it might take you 20 minutes to drive to a grocery store, but it wouldn't have access to power lines or be on a road that is maintained in the winter... if you are living off grid and have a tractor/plow to clear your own road, then you'd be fine :) (winters are the downside to living here... sometimes as low as -40F for January)

Land already used in farming with tiled fields, cleared, barns and a house would run closer to $120,000... that would get you 35 acres of drain tiled fields, 85 acres of forest, a workshop, a large cattle barn and a 5 bedroom house :)

:welcome

Looking forward to reading more of your adventures!

I was looking on eBay for land as well, and let me tell you, BE CAREFUL

We found that some of the pictures were taken at one spot on the land from different angles to entice the buyer. We also actually went out and walked the land, so we could physically see the boundaries, and the entire spot, not to mention what was around the property. We found many places had bad neighbors, bad soil, or required more work than it was worth.

We also looked at the region, how harsh the normal winter would be, or how hot a typical summer was. Amount of rainfall, etc. The research for property is a lot of work, and that is my best advice, be careful and be thorough.

Keep us posted on your accomplishments!!

Well dace, I ain't gonna lie down and die just couse of that, I know she wouldn't want that, so the only thing to do is push forward. I have somewhere close to 3,5 years to find a perfect place, stack funds and resources and be all ready to start it up... I know it might seem like a lot... but is it.. really? I mean I want to buy a huge variety of veggies and multiply on a piece of land somewhere ( community/allotment garden i think it is called for one) by collecting my own seeds... testing some gardening technologies. Also starting some gorilla gardens mostly to provide some extent of my ow food for that time... Figure out the question whether I want to remain in Poland or move somewhere. I mean there is a lot to think about... that is for sure, but I will take it one step at a time.
First I wanted to ask you folks to pitch in, because some web statistics are one thing and what it really is, might be a whole other matter. So... forget that 30,000 limit, and say you simply had to point out THE best state in US for a SS living. I was thinking that 30K for bare land, and build a eco-dome(earth-bag) home, generally make a dome/circle themed farm:

eco-domes as a home
mandala gardens
dome greenhouses from growing-spaces.
even one of those wood/plywood dome kits as a barn.

but since it seems it would be easier and cheaper to just buy some pre prepared land with something already build on it... and then work with that, why not do that ;) and I really am not looking for a huge piece of land.. like 100 acres, closer to as i said earlier 10-15 ... well 20 at the most. So the average price for a farm of this acreage with some dwelling, barns and all that is around 175,000$ so I am quite sure it would be possible to buy that kind of acreage or even some more and rent it to someone.

going of grid ( in terms of electricity) wouldn't be SUCH a pain thanks to wood gasification. I mean.. you got to heat the house anyway right? so why not use that double...

since I am a speed junkie ( motorcycle, glider) remoteness of such a place wouldn't be such a pain, but boy.... -40F that is -40C that is frea**ing COLD...

Poland might seem like a great place, to start that kind of a lifestyle... but oh well... we'll see. I'll write some more later, any Q? feel free to ask ;)

Another thing to remember is the costs of permits, when you want to build something here in the U.S. They are sometimes outrageously expensive!!! It is different for each location, since each community makes their own laws in addition to state and county laws

Which part of Poland are you from? My family is from around Llodz.

i still say -40 C or F, up north is still warmer than -15 C down in southern Ontario where I 'm living now. Hwillm, seriously?????? $120,000 for a workable farm????????????? Any power plants up there, specifically gas fired combined cycle (or co-gen)? Dang!!! maybe we need to move to NB instead.

Sorry about your loss.
Some areas are strict about building but further out from the cities, things get much less restricted.

Arkansas near the Ozarks or the Ouachitas.
Missouri around the Ozarks
Oklahoma
central part of Georgia
Colorado- but it does get colder

Around these parts an acre costs around $2000 - $5000 in an unrestricted remote area, or 5800 -14,500 zloty (1400 - 3500 eur) less if you buy more.
1 acre is about 0.4 hectares or 64 meters square and is more than enough to build an earth or berm home. But be forewarned that living off grid is not easy and if you require the necessities of creature comforts it will not be cheap either.

Solar electric will cost about $10,000 (30,000 PLN) to give you what you are somewhat accustomed to, but could easily get by on half of that and still be happy. Solar hot water is fairly cheap as is rain harvesting for drinking water if you are handy with tools. A privy pit or composting toilet would be the coup de grace.

As a word of caution I would never use ebay unless it is a Realtor that has a real office and registered with the state. There are many legit people selling land online but the risk is too great to consider unless you do your homework and check them out thoroughly first - money should only change hands at the title office.

You are also responsible for checking the local codes of any area that your are looking to buy land to make sure of what you can or can't build, Realtors can be somewhat evasive in this area as they don't know all the codes themselves.

Ask as many questions you want, the people here are well informed and very helpful and can definitely help you on any self sufficient problems or endeavors.
