Sad News!

The lambs were killed by a Coyote!! It dug under the fence at the goat pen!
The Goats are all ok. Though the lambs were the same age as the goat kids,
they were lots smaller.

The goat pen is now hopefully more secure from digging preditors.

On a lighter note, I harversted some Basil this am,
here are the trimmed and washed leaves ready to
go in the Vitamix

and this is how much Pesto I got after adding Olive Oil, Lemon Juice, Garlic
Pine Nuts, Parmesan Cheese and a bit of salt.

If I can harvest this amount every couple of weeks, I should have plenty
of Pesto by the end of summer.

I'm so sorry. That's one thing I fear w/my goats. They're right next to the woods, and I know we have yotes.

I'm so sorry. That's one thing I fear w/my goats. They're right next to the woods, and I know we have yotes.

The main problem is... The goat pen is at a private school, an old horse ranch that was converted to a very nice school. The kids get as close to "homeschooling" as a regular school can do.

Anyhow, no one lives on the property. None of us are far away, within 5 minutes or less of the place. The goat pen is fenced with a tall chainlink fence. It is not all that big of an area. Enough for a few goats and a few chickens. A good dog would be great to have in there... But, I think a dog would get bored if they had to spend all day in that small of an area.

Last year when we lost a kid to a bobcat, we put up a "goat jail" that now doubles as a chicken coop at night. It isn't much to look at but it is secure from preditors.

It is covered in a double layer of hardware cloth, has a 3/4 inch plywood top. So far nothing has broken in to get the chickens at night. But the lambs were out in the open.

I don't think getting sheep in there is the best idea, there is no grass for them to nibble. They will have to just eat hay. But, it is not my decision. I hope if they get new lambs, they will be take more care to keep them safe at night.

We have coyotes through our yard all the time. My Rottie is the only way to keep them out now. A yard dog might help.
