With the days getting shorter I will have more time for reading, so I'm wondering what your recommendations would be, relating to self sufficiency.

Currently my little library consists of:

The Encyclopedia of Country Living ( of course :D )
Living on a Few Acres
Foxfire series (1 - 9)
Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens

Any suggestions for over-winter reading?

Thanks,
Mark

If you grow food it's a good idea to know new ways to cook natural foods. I cook very differently from how I was raised, and am still experimenting, learning, and changing how I feed our family. My most used books from the kitchen shelf are:

Stocking Up, Rodale Press

Putting Food By, Hertzberg, Vaughan & Greene

Rodale's Complete Book of Home Freezing, Hodges

Carla Emery's Old Fashioned Recipe Book
(Much more than a cookbook, an encyclopedia of country living)

Laurel's Kitchen, Robertson

Passionate Vegetarian, Dragonwagon
(a huge book great even for non vegetarians)

Vegan Vittles, Stepaniak
(I'm not vegan, but this book is so innovative that I find I use a lot of the techniques)

I just subscribed to Countryside Magazine, so I plan on studying them cover to cover as they arrive. I'm planning my list to Santa based on some of the suggestions I received on an earlier positing about good SS books. If anyone reads something they're particularly impressed with this winter, please pass the suggestions along!

In every CS mag there is a page or two devoted to books of this kind on nearly every subject you could want. Such a neat mag!

These aren't really how to books but I think are good reading related to self sufficiency.

Animal, Vegetable Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver

The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan
