We had a rough day at the brother in laws ranch yesterday! We went to do the feeding while he is out of town. One of his bulls has been sick and he died while we were there. Passed peacefully which is great but we hate it anyway. They think he had cancer. In another pasture we had to pull a stillborn calf (upside down and backwards). So DH and some borrowed help buried them both. We did not do much else yesterday and DH went out to help his brother (back now) to put out fertilizer before the storms come. I need to cook breakfast potatoes for the next week and other than that we are eating turkey and leftovers--fine for me!

Whew! It's 28 degrees and the thermometer was frozen to the cooler! I'm gonna have pupsicles when I take them out!

First off this morning I am making yogurt from dry milk and then chocolate banana bread (sweetened with honey). Will try using more oats and cornmeal mix and less flour, maybe more eggs. The chili I made yesterday should last a few days.

DH left early to check on the dog we found living in the woods. She will get some of the homemade dog biscuits I made yesterday.

Not much to do but I better get started soon! Have fun!!!!

ew that is rough with the livestock. I gotta say I hate when something big dies. I was always so happy we owned a backhoe. I had 2 horses I had to put down thru the years and that backhoe was a lifesaver.

hey, what kind of dog did ya find?

I'm going to learn to tan hides since I will have free access to them!!!! What all can they be used for besides rugs and wall hangings? I guess I could learn to make clothes from them. Seems like there should be many uses! Anyone?


DH has noticed a starving (backbone stands up and ribs stick out) dog living in the woods by the roadside between the rv park and his brothers ranch. We just have no place to put her until we move and she won't get in the truck yet anyway so dh feeds and waters her twice a day and fixed up a little bed in a cardboard box back in the woods. I just don't know what else to do. At least if she dies, she will have had a few days or weeks of knowing someone cared. If she stays back in the woods, when we move we will bring her to the new house. After almost a week of good food, I can already see a difference and she lets us pet her, just still scared. I am pretty sure she was dumped and really hope she stays in the woods. She's about medium/small with some hound in her I think. I would guess about 30#. She has already been a mom so we would def have to get her fixed. Time to take my Chili dogs out!

oh man I hate that starvation look on any animal. THAT is one lucky dog. That dog is super lucky you also decided to take it with you. By the time you hit the new place that dog will be attached to you at the hip I am sure. And if the health is coming back, then starvation was the problem. At least it may not be truly sick or anything like that.

I love hearing stories like yours. Someone saw and took action! I like that!

Hides--hmm...you can make seat covers? for bar stools or chairs.

My dry milk yogurt in the crockpot turned out great! It took about 4 hours and I messed with the crockpot a few times because my crockpot is newer and cooks hotter than I think it should. I put it on keep warm and then would turn it off and then back on. It made 4 half pints. Choc. banana bread is sugar free (contains 1/2 cup of honey) and tastes great! I got my food processor and it is a monster!!!! It will do whatever I need from the garden. I'm thinking salsa, relishes, slicing to dehydrate, french fries. Woohoo!!!!
I also had ordered good nail clippers and pedipaws for the pups. Already used the nail clippers on Bud. They have a safety guard that I love. Gotta get batteries for the pedipaw deal.
Girl dog is fine and is working the corner! DH said there was a truck leaving that had just dumped food on the ground for her. So she is making out well! Her little den is still well hidden and he added a big towel today. Nothing about our house yet, but hope is still here.
