Just to throw something else into the works, how about a water wheel in the creek driving a generator or a pump?

Just a thought.

If you going with the generator route and rain falls regularly you may just want a holding tank of some kind. You know to use on occasion when it's dry. This way you can just haul the generator up once in a while and fill the tank. Then the water will be there and ready when needed.

Sometimes I over complicate things but if all she needs is a rain barrel to fill a bucket then a $70 solar cell, $50 battery and $20 bilge pump would be all that is needed.

I just want to know if how can we make sure we start the generator before plugging in the pump and how can we make sure the pump is not under load by leaving the intake hose out of the water, running it dry for the few seconds it will take to throw the hose back in the water will not hurt it?
