Sufficient Self's Bible Study Group

I vote for discarding the old chapter by chapter review of the books. I'd like to study the Bible as it pertains to our lives right now and to world events.

I chime in with "anything except Genesis".

I was telling BB that I keep starting to read the Bible at the beginning and never get too far. So I've kind of gone over Genesis too many times and the rest of the Bible not enough.

Im formulating a study plan and it has to do with Genesis some. Mainly as a similarity study between it and another book...................

I would like to study a book from the New Testament. One of the gospels would be great! Maybe a complete chapter at a time is too much but a section of a chapter would be easier to do. Sorry I gave up on Ecclesiastes. It was a little too depressing for me at this time of year especially after some of the things I have been through recently.

Here's a question: What do you all say to someone who declares that there couldn't be a Hell if God is a merciful God?

Oooohh, that is a good one, Bee. I really don't know what I would say. I think I would tell them that I believe that hell is eternal and real. However, I don't understand why he would allow us to go there. Perhaps someone can explain.

Evil goes to Hell...of course He is merciful in trying to show us the ways to be less Evil and forgiving the evilness within us. In the end, if there was no place for evil such as hell we'd just all keep being miserably surrounded by evil. That sounds pretty merciful to me personally I desire to be good, not evil...and don't want evil around me. Thank God for His mercy and the grace given us to be able to avoid such a place!

My thoughts on Ecclesiastes. It seems that most chapters are the similar and commenting on them might seem a bit redundant. Can I just ask you guys to finish reading the book, without feeling the need to comment on it? I have been reading it, but there seems no point on commenting on it since it seems it is pretty black and white.

Cans we all take some time to finish reaing it, and then maybe give a few comments on it?

In thei interim, I think Bee's idea of looking at some questions people have about Christianity migh mke for a very good discussion.

We have free will. God gives us the choice to be good or bad, believe in Him or not believe in Him. He is merciful in that he gave us a Savior (Jesus) to believe & trust in and have our sins washed away. If we choose not to believe in the Savior and reject Him, then all God can see when he looks at us is sin and God can't look at sin. So that is why there is a hell. Hell is total and permanent separation from God.
