That's what always held me back -- expensive to buy and somewhat fragile while young.
I want a heritage breed so that I don't HAVE to buy them. I'm not interested in buying poults for $5-8 each, maybe losing a few, paying to feed them, and finally having q bird that cost way more than what's in the grocery store.
But turkey is my favorite meat, the super-cheap turkeys didn't happen here this year, I believe I can grow much more healthful food than I can buy, and everyone keeps saying how much better home-grown turkeys taste. So it will be not until the 2nd generation reaches slaughter age, but -- I REALLY want turkeys.
I think fencing will really be the issue. If they'd roost up in the old barn I expect they'd be safe at night, but I don't want them wandering other people's property. Maybe the local pastures, but not neighbor's yards.
Thanks for not minding the hijack.
