I know that manufacturers put sell by dates on their products for their own reasons, but what are the health consequences? What types of preservatives are in the foods that are making them last 1-2-5-10 years past their "due dates"? This is generally regarding canned and boxed foods.
I love going to the discount grocery store to get canned food/Cereal that is close to its date, and even up to 6 months out, but I rarely use canned food, other than tomato sauce/paste and tuna. Next year I will have a garden, so I will be canning my tomatoes! YAY!
As far as technology has gotten us in the preservation department, I don't think it is doing our health a service to eat food that is beyond about 6 months out.
I dunno...what do you all think? I think the poorest people (low income-like us, and seniors) are suffering from eating food that is nutritionally low and high in sodium and other preservatives.
I have a large food budget for our family of 4. I choose to have a large budget because I don't want to sacrifice the building blocks of my kid's future health, or shorten the quality of life for my husband and I.
I try to use this order to decide what I am going to buy/serve my family:
1. Fresh
2. Frozen
3. Dried/Packaged (Rare)
4. Canned
Am I just being a stick in the mud???
