It is that fancy hot pink field tape I put up in rows --the deer dont jump in the fruit plot

Deer tape -- she's using the pink stuff. I use white for the goats if a twist in it, it will flutter in a breeze, they see a height - purely optical fence challenge. Similar to fluttering CD discs in orchard. Doesn't stop 100% but, stops most attempts to jump in. Or, for goats, to jump out

I still have my fig starts in the barn tackroom. I unwrapped them a few weeks ago so they can get afternoon sunlight from a window. They say potential freeze overnight, so I covered them up. I haven't checked on them for a while. They could use watering but they are all pushing a bit of new growth. So they survived winter, with the heat tape idea April 15th is our last average frost date so they stay in the barn tackroom until then. They are super tender right now.

P.S. incase you haven't noticed... my little nursery plants are run largely by folgers.

This morning I picked up my friend's pear scions from the post office. I grafted them onto OHxF333 (semi dwarf) pear root stocks right away.and potted them in folgers coffee cans. I like growing out first year grafts in folgers coffee cans. Doing so, restricts their growth and makes them just the right size to plant in the orchard come late fall without a bunch of digging.

My friend wrapped the scions in a moist paper towel and sealed them in a gallon sized ziplock baggie. I'm glad he did because all looked great to me, dispite 3 day delay from USPS.

I whip and tongue grafted 1 scion per rootstock. Ayers, Clark’s Small Yellow, Ewart, Harrow Sweet, Luscious, Maxine, Potomac, Seckel Xtra Large, Shenandoah and Warren. He sent spares of each so I can regraft if some don't take.

Now I have 10 more european pear varieties

P.S. if you are starting to think I have a fruit tree addiction, I'm just a amateur. My friend has over 120 differnt european pear varieties. I asked him to send me 10 decent sized pears with resistance to fire blight and scab. Above is what he sent.

Next year I'll ask him for asian pear scions which he has many differnt varieties also.

So I ordered a apple and aprocoit tree from a nursey over in Washington state. My order came in and the aprocoit tree is massive for a bear root. The roots were nicely bundled and wrapped in wet newspaper. I inspected the roots to find out three of the tap roots were like 3 foot long. No way I was going dig a 3 foot deep hole with a shovel. I hitched up my 12 inch diameter aguer to the tractor and ran it down a good 3 foot. Took all of 15 minutes and saved me a lot of digging by hand. I've never recieved a bare root fruit tree so massive until now. I hope it survives, if it does I should have aprocoits next year.

I also sprayed the orchard, winds were calm, absolutely beautiful day today.

I grafted a warren pear scion onto OHxF333 pear rootstock Monday, buds breaking Wednesday already. Is that really even possible? I suspose it is, because it has happened . Really liking zip ties.
