What did you do in your orchard today?

Just now breaking dormancy.

A local old fella prunes fruit trees. He did my neighbor's orchard - it took three days cus both residents could no longer manage the task these last few years. And then one of them died last month.

He charges a measly $25 an hour and was at my home for 2 hours. What a difference, compared to me reading my Sunset Gardening book and trying to get it right.

He's be pruning since he was a teenager!

@CrealCritter is it warming enough for your orchard to be busting forth yet? You had some super things going. ☺️
Thank you, I’m really glad you noticed. As you know, it’s been a lot of work. But seeing it finally start to come together and bear delicious fruit, makes it all worthwhile.

I just finished pruning several of our trees, so I appreciate your tribute to a skilled and humble craftsman. It's a gentle reminder that some things are worth investing in, not just for the work itself, but for the peace of mind and wisdom that come with true expertise. $50 for two hours of thoughtful care? That's a small price to pay for preserving your trees.

I lost 5 newly planted cherry trees during the two floods we had last spring. I'm still learning how to care for them, and I didn’t quite get it right this time. Weather has a way of humbling us, even when we’re trying our best. I’ve since learned that Mazzard rootstock prefers well-drained soil which, under normal conditions, wouldn’t have been an issue. Anyone have tips for adapting to wetter sites or choosing more flood-tolerant rootstocks?
