Not really. This was a neighbor of one of our friends. Her father died a few years ago and she decided to clean out the barn because she didn't have a use for all this stuff. In August she is having another one to clean out the other out buildings. We'll probably go to that one also.
 
A couple of weeks ago I talked with the manager at our local pub/restaurant. I asked if they could keep aside the jars they use for me, if they had no other use for them. She said sure, she would put a note on an empty box for me, to have the empties put in there rather than the re-cycle bin. I was hoping for some 1 gallon jars, but today I got the offerings, and they were pretty meager, unfortunately. There were a few large pickle jars - quart size - but most of them were regular size pickle jars like we might find in the supermarket. No matter, I've taken the larger ones, and washed them thoroughly, and will use them for storage in my pantry. The smaller ones will be re-cycled. Not a great deal, but better than the nothing I would have had without asking :lol:.
 
Check with some other restaurants in your area....we got some great gallon glass jars from a pizza place. Anyplace that makes sandwiches a lot (and is not a big chain) is likely to get pickles in glass gallon jars.
 
I wanted to add eight or ten laying hens this year, but just didn't have the time or energy for raising chicks, so I put it off until next year.

Today, someone gave me six Plymouth Rock pullets, two months old....for free! All the hard work is done. I just have to take the next three weeks to shift them from mash to whole grains, then they can join my flock.

Meanwhile, my six new chicks are all thriving, mama hen is feeding and caring for them like an old pro. So if even two pullets make it to adulthood from that hatch, I will have reached my goal, without any expense and hardly any work at all......yeah, baby!

Oh, and I made a loaf of whole wheat artisan bread on my stone today, it was AWESOME with some fresh chevre for lunch.....but my stone mysteriously split in two in the oven!!!
 
Does having hatched my own chicks today, even though it did up the electric bill a bit but kept my chick buying habit at bay, count??? :rolleyes:

I did a search to see if you had posted the recipe but came up empty. If you could find time to share it some day, I would really appreciate it. No rush though
 
I used the one from the Mother Earth News site, it is a recent article, this year. It is called something like Artisan bread in five minutes a day......I did not use the whole wheat recipe they talk about, though, I just used the main recipe and used freshly ground red wheat berries. The article talks about the bitter taste of whole wheat....that writer never tasted whole wheat flour that is not rancid! :rolleyes:
 
The Chinese buffet we go to on Fri. nights has started saving their food grade 5 gallon buckets for us. They get the soy sauce in them and then throw them away. We got the first 2 tonight. FREE. No better way to save $ than free. :D He said they will save them as long as we want to keep taking them.

Quail, yes, it counts, especially since you are getting foundation stock!

How come I can't find free buckets???
