What do use to see at night?

Electric company came about two years ago to put a street light on the side of the driveway. I said oh no you don't! Our whole road has no street lights and I like it that way. I enjoy looking up at the sky on a clear night and seeing stars and sometimes the milky way.

We have a pup in the house that needs to go out at night regularly. My wife is night blind - so I'm the night owl around here...

I use a battery operated LED head lamp. It works well and I'm pretty happy with it.

What do you use to see at night and do you like it?

Since I'm in a village right now my yard is well lit by the street lamps, but when needed, I use the flashlight in my cell phone, or borrow my neighbours' rabbit hunting flashlight (which is what I call it - you can light up half a street with that thing). I once bought a small pocket flashlight at a filling station convenience store and was surprised how well it worked and how absolutely perfect it was for candling eggs too I'm thinking of getting one of those again.

When we were in no electriciteeee South Africa, we kept some back-up lights for the power failures, some that turned on as the lights went off, some battery powered lamps that we could carry around. None were lasting quality

I'm with you on not having a dusk til dawn light at the house....just RUINS the night sky, attracts a million bugs, uses unnecessary energy and lights the way for any and all thieves should they decide to visit.

We have motion sensor lights at front and back porch but those are just for when we come home at night and need to see our way to the door, as we have no porch lights we can leave on for that.

Other than that, we just use good ol' flashlights. Mostly those cheapy little LED flashlights that are so bright nowadays but we also have a few that are military grade(they call them "tactical"...whatever that means) bright...painful to look upon but great for finding a blood trail in the night or checking out things on the homestead.

We have a few bright headlamps but I don't often use them.

I have a couple of those "tactical" type flashlights....really, really good if you have a need for some great distance light at night! Amazing how well they light. AMAZING...

But for "general use" I have a double spotlight unit mounted above my barn feed room door, which is about 100' from my porch -- it has a remote, so I can turn it own before walking out. Lights up a whole lot of area. Those hunter head lamps are my "go to" for night time feeding, walking, checking on coops, foaling/kidding -- leaves hands free to help, carry, move, whatever! I love those things.

We have a street light in our front yard and we like it. It keeps coyotes less interested in coming close and I can let the dogs out without going with them and can see what's going on. I can see the stars just fine from the backyard. We have headlamps for when we go out beyond where the light shines.

We have solar motion lights on two sides of the bigger barn. I do see them come on and off during the night due to the dogs rustling around or the goats/horses/pigs shifting places. I like them too because if I'm out before sunrise (and that's pretty normal) they come on for me when I walk out there. I usually leave the lights on at night in the smaller barn that's closer to the house. It's just a few fluorescents and don't make too much of an impact on the electric bill. I try to remember to turn them off every morning. And for general nighttime use we use whatever fits the need at the time. I use a head-lamp when I go out to feed in the mornings. We have plenty of those smaller led flashlights and a couple of the bigger tactical lights that MH mentioned. AND, if that's not enough we have a portable flood lamp with a long extension cord that can bee powered by the generator if necessary. But - no big street lamps here.

It's very dark out here. A few of the neighbors have lights on all night, but they are quite a distance from us. The only one close enough doesn't usually have the light on that would bother us.


We have several 800-1000 lumen flashlights bought at Costco on sale a few years ago. One in each vehicle and the house. They get a lot of use for the night time clam digs each fall/winter.

I have my little 300 lumen 5 inch that I mostly use for candling silkie eggs. Then there is the 2000 lumen flashlight that you can see color on the tree leaves 400+ feet away.

Can you tell my hubby has a flashlight obsession?



My 250 lumen headlamp gets the most use since it leaves my hands free.
