When is it To Hot

It's to hot for chickens when they are holding their wings away from their body in conjunction with some of the following symptoms that you may need to take action.

Panting. Chickens only pant if they are hot, so this can be the first indicator that they are becoming overheated!
Their comb and wattles will feel hot to the touch.
Seems to have lost her appetite.
Lethargic behavior. Weakness.
Closed eyes while standing.
May be staggering when walking.
The may lay down completely spread out with wings and feet extended.
Watery droppings caused by increased water intake
Decreased egg production (though admittedly this sometimes happen during heat waves without the chickens suffering from heat stress!

I give my chickens water in a shallow tub. They can stand in it, their blood circulates through their feet, the water cools their blood. I freeze scraps for them, watermelon rind is a favorite.

I live in a place that still requires signs in car parks to tell people not to leave children in hot cars

Its nice to know people are thinking of the animals in the heat. Remember to change the water troughs more regularly as well as bacteria thrives in warm still water.

Even though we are in a dryer area than Grants Pass and Medford, we are higher in altitude, and our temps are typically 10-15 degrees cooler than them. Our normal summer temps are in the 80's, with about a month of 90 degree temps in August. This summer has been unusual. I guess it's to balance out the weather y'all are getting in the east.

The weather app on my phone says it’s 95F degrees. I think it’s hotter than that. I worked outside this morning until 11:00 and came in soaking wet, even my socks were sweat soaked!

Our normal summer high is around 81°F. We were 98 yesterday. At least it's not the 115°F from the last heat wave.
