I started using a menstrual cup almost a year ago, and haven't looked back, I can't even express what a difference it has made for me, while true you can't make one yourself they last for years are comfortable clean up super easily, and I can actually live a normal life( for a girl with really heavy periods that means something). I highly recommend doing some research and seeing if that may be an avenue you are willing to make.
