Maschil, I have not purchased a mill yet. I am in the research stage. I have read for some time about people making their own bread from home-milled flour, but just haven't dug deeper to make it part of my daily living.

ORchick, thanks for the link, it looks intresting. And thanks for explaining what you make with the hard and soft wheats. Corn Woman, thanks for weighing in and I hope they deliver to Texas!

me&thegals, you grow your own? That is wonderful. And you get your hard wheat from a cousin? How cool to be able to have what you want and variety too!

opiemaster, thanks for asking questions so that we all learn.

Moolie, thanks for explaining about gluten and listing the grains that don't have gluten it them. Your explanation about hard red wheat sounds like the way to go for a loaf of tasty yummy bread!

Thanks to my SS family for your help! Anyone else that mills their own flour, please let us hear from you!

When my mother passeed away we cleaned out her food pantry as my step dad sold the house. ( I can see now where I get the whole ss thing from.) She had whole grain stored in sealed canning jars, but, she used a Vitamix Super 3600 to grind it with. I received the vitamix kinda on accident at the auction when the auctioneer sold it to me for $1 as no one bid on it. :D They sell used on E-BAY for $120 and up, used! I lucked out there.
Deffinatly thanks for ALL the info on here about flour and mills, It was something I had over looked until made mention of it here. ;)
I wonder if a person could post on Craigslist that you wanted to buy bulk wheat and maybe a local farmer would just sell it to you. :/

I have looked around on the net for wheat availability and price. For simplicity's sake I will price hard red wheat. I have not contacted any of these sites to check on shipping.

50 pound bag is $42.75

50 pound bag is #47.99

40 pound pail is $69.92. It comes nitrogen sealed and in a mylar liner bag which sounds good for long term storage, but I want to OPEN mine and use, so I suppose that would negate the whole nitrogen seal thing.

Azure Standard was reccomended earlier but I didn't sign in just so I could see their prices. Anybody have a price for 50 pound bag of hard red wheat?

And then I found this. The Mormons believe in food storage and they have Home Storage Centers to help their members do so. There is one in Houston, which would be the closest one to me. Don't know if they would ship and I found this price for 25 pound bag of $11. 70 I don't know if that is a nation wide price, but it sounds good! Now I can't find my way back to that page. :( But here is a list of their Home Storage Center locations.

A 45 pound pail, sealed, is $46.95

I am still looking and doing my research. Can someone tell me if these prices are reasonable, low or just stupid high? What do you pay for your wheat?

Azure Standard -- 50# hard red wheat, organic - $19.15, with free shipping, IF you live within their truck routes area, and if there is a drop point near you, and if you order a minimum of $50 worth of goods.
Hard white wheat, on the other hand, is $32.40 for 50#, organic :(

I've been buying my wheat from Augason farms. 45lbs in mylar and bucket was $43.69. I never buy just the wheat, last order was $150 and shipping was $11.

You could also check your local farm stands. There is one here that sells 50lb bags for $12 but it still needs to be cleaned. They only have limited amounts though.

ORChick, that's an amazing deal for organic hard red! I've got it as low as $25, but never $19.

It is, isn't it? Its a shame I looked, as white wheat is preferred here, and now I feel like I need to campaign to change that
