Who's SS while doing full time RV living?

When DH first mentioned it to me, I responded that it was going to be pretty tight in there with all the chickens, dogs and cats. The next time the subject came up and I told him that I didn't think a tomato plant in a pot was going to cut it for me, he offered to fill the back end of the pickup with dirt and I could plant potatoes in there. I did check out floor plans of various models online and there's a new/used RV place close to us.

We have a couple friends that have 5th wheels. One couple is full time, living in a tiny place w/ no slides - money was a huge issue for them after gigantic medical bills, etc etc. He loves it, she's adjusted. They go where there's no snow, or a bit of work, but otherwise don't move around too much. They eat out or grill almost every night.

The other couple just upgraded their's and I can see the difference that the slides make. They're planning on selling their home, buying a few lots in a dinky town, build a big metal building and put a double wide mobile home by it. Then they can leave for a few weeks at a time, hoping neighbors will keep an eye on the place and be back in time for gardening season.

Snapshot, I'll have to check out your journal! I have read blogs, including the one that Leta suggested. I even found one that a gal canned some pints of spaghetti sauce in her RV. I guess that's my biggest toot. The gardening, preserving, SS lifestyle is so much a part of me that I can't imagine giving it up willingly. But I am willing to make some compromises.

Quartzsite is a favorite place for my Dad as well, he loves the amount of things (tailored to his age capabilities) to do from four wheeling, hiking, prospecting, etc to do there. I am thinking of getting him a beginners prospecting kit for Christmas He loves to try new things! My Dad also has planters he carries with him when he travels.

I don't think a high degree of SS is achievable on the road. That said, we have put a lot of thought into buying a park model RV and placing it on land. I don't think that's what you have in mind, though.

Yes, I had questions about that too, Leta.

Marianne, were you thinking of parking the RV on a piece of land so you can have a garden, chickens, etc? Otherwise it would be difficult to be very SS, would it not? Or am I missing a piece of the puzzle? (not surprizing!)

No, I wasn't thinking of parking it semi permanently on some ground. But DH#1 mentioned that he'd like to buy some ground in a remote location so he'd have some place to camp, whatever he's going to do, and we could be the care takers, watch his stuff while he's gone months on end, etc. Looks good on paper from his perspective, but we had a chat about his definition of 'remote'...among other things! So if we did something like that, then having a garden plus a few hens would be in the plan.

I wouldn't mind doing a little traveling, but I'm a take roots kind of person. Also messy creative and that takes space. I think we'd probably stay in one location for several months before moving to another. So far, I have only talked to one person that did it for a year and did not like it.
