On a much more positive note, my son and I are out of there, we're safe and we're happy Ireland is not perfect, no country is, but it's heaven compared to what we left behind and I'm so grateful for this country and being able to call it home.

Oh... I hope you didn't dig too deep into the facts. The truth and reality of what's going on down there is not pretty.

The Washington Post should do their homework before being so eager to contradict things they clearly know nothing about. Perhaps do a Google search for YT videos of S.A. politicians singing "Kill the boer! Kill the farmer!" to the masses would make it more real for them?

Journalism is a slippery slope and I'm careful to take anything I read in news articles too seriously, as you've clearly stated now, they often put their own spin or agenda on reporting.

I have always been curious how accurate (or not) the media's representation of what's happening in other countries is. I usually don't know anyone with firsthand knowledge.

No I only read a few articles and no pictures popped up!

The media is a different kind of animal. Some are awesome, some accurate and factual, some censored and some are out to cause trouble it seems. I find some of the news sites and others here in Ireland hilarious. No nonsense reporting and discussing things with some personal feelings discreetly thrown in.

Where S.A. is concerned, for much of it, ignorance is bliss. I usually tell people things are really bad down there and don't look for details, just believe me and leave it at that. And if you have to, don't say I didn't warn ya!

There is hope though, small hope, but it's there. The new president seems to want to change things for the better. My aunt told me last week a few European countries told the S.A. government directly that if things don't change and get better down there, they will withdraw all support to the country and basically blank S.A. I didn't look for details on this, I'm just hoping... I'm also hoping that Europe will start granting whites from S.A. refugee status or allow them to come here as asylum seekers. Australia is already issuing visas for farmers from there: Australia inches closer to fast-track visa plan for South African farmers I'm planning to get as many of my family over here as can, when I have citizenship, starting with my brother.

You know, I can't help thinking that if it was the whites killing the blacks in SA, the whole world would be up in arms.

And the media (at least here in US) loves to denigrate Trump any chance they get, because Trump is the "Flavor of the Month"

Thanks @Britesea I checked to see if I can have my brother come over and found I need to earn enough monthly to show I can fully support him here, before they'd consider it. Sadly I don't, though I'm working on finding ways to increase my income. Our only option now is waiting for me to get my citizenship, which will allow him to apply for a different visa that will give him permission to work here, which is what he prefers anyway. It's horribly frustrating, having to wait and worry and pray he'll be safe for another 2 years, but what can I do? I simply don't have the means to "sponsor" him at the moment.

Oh, the world was up in arms over apartheid and now things are way worse? Some are turning a blind eye, or saying it's lies. That makes me so mad. I met and spoke with a family from S.A. that moved here after surviving a farm attack. It's very real and very awful and scary for those having to live through it and the daily fear. It took me awhile to relax here and stop fretting over every bump in the night, being nervous about going out in the evenings and looking over my shoulder all the time.

I heard about the media attacking Trump all the time over there. We get the odd report here about his doings and other news from the States that is interesting enough to take our minds off the ongoing Brexit circus, but no-one seems to have a good or bad opinion about the man here. In fact, the only negativity I heard here from the Irish about the States was disbelief and horror at the shootings and violence over there.

We don't. We just got annoyed when he had a planned trip over a few months ago (which got cancelled) and they wanted to do something ridiculous and expensive for "safety" at Dublin airport for his arrival. We thought that was way too much fuss and expense for one person. People in S.A. that I spoke to like and appreciate him and his outspokenness as he talked about the trouble in S.A. a few times and brings it under the world's attention!
