Now that spring has sprung the whip-poor-wills have returned. One has taken up residence in a maple tree right out side my bed room window. Aint no sleeping with a whip-poor-will calling all night long into your window. We have to shut the window and turn on the air conditioning. That whip-poor-will is loud and annoying, right outside our bedroom window.

Yeah, proximity would be a bummer. I grew up in Southern Maine, and the Whip-poor-wills were plentiful. When we moved to central Maine, they were rare, then totally non-existent. I finally heard my first one in decades last summer! I love the sound of the Whip-poor-will!

We have a family cabin on a small lake where we spent just about every weekend during the summer when I was little. We would sit on the screen porch and watch the fireflies and wait for the whip-poor-will to sing. It was always a thrill when it would fly up and land on the concrete pad at the doorway. Man, that little bird was loud! Dad let us stay up until it flew away, so we always sat really quiet and listened.

There are several around our house. We love to hear them. Windows are not a problem as DH has the AC on. LOL
