We are too close to the small, local airport to do any real stargazing. :(
I didn't know how close we really were until they clear cut the land around the airport, now we see the flashing light all night...

I love visiting Colorado. West of Colorado springs, west of the front range, near Hartsel. I never knew the milky way was so bright

I lived about 15 miles west of Cheyenne, WY for 8 years. Right on the eastern face of the "mountains", about 1400 feet above Cheyenne. Even though I was higher than the city and a fair distance away, I think we had better stargazing in Northern Wisconsin.

The nights have been stunning and super clear here lately. Its breathtaking. I have street lights around my block, but if I walk out to the dam (or even just behind the pub), it is near on perfect star gazing conditions. I often go for moonlit walks.

I know very few constellations because literature we had growing up was northern hemisphere focused and mostly useless to me in the southern hemisphere. Of course I know how to find the southern cross and saucepan, but that's about it!

I'd love to learn more and was just chatting to a friend about it last night. I am sure I will be able to find much better quality maps online now :)

That would tend to be a problem! Hope you can find more suitable maps!

There are free constellations apps for android, I'm not sure about Apple. I can't comment on any of the apps because I haven't used them. Just throwing this out there.

I know a few like the big and little dippers, but honestly, I just enjoy the star gazing experience.

i love just finding a nice place to sprawl out on the ground in the grass or on a blanket and then look up and watch the sky and talk about nothing and everything for hours at a time. :) i'm sure there are some good southern hemisphere maps out there on the web...

My sister used a constellation app on her android when they were camping in the mountains if Idaho. The kids loved it. In fact, her youngest has graduated from college and my sister is still using the app whenever she is up in the mountains overnight.

where we are at now isn't too bad, especially in the middle of winter on a clear cold night.

when i was up north the beach along Lake Superior was a great place to go. until then i hadn't seen the Milky Way as clearly.

On a clear night all times of the year. I step out my front door, walk less than 30 ft to the other side of my work shop facing East and look up. There is the milky way in all its Glory. I live in the middle of nowhere and have no light pollution, except for what I generate myself.

My son brought one of his co-workers out here to drop off some logs to saw. He said "what part of the world are we in right here?" He was completely lost and didn't know where he was -:lol. We are not even on GPS and I like it that way:)
