I put Ringo with the ewes a week ago. Early spring babies are good for me. I have lush clover, fescue and rye grass in the spring, about the time the lambs start eating grass. It helps them grow.

That makes sense. I've got some seed to put out - guess I need to start thinking about that. I haven't even looked at the ethnic holidays next year - but I hope to have some guys big enough to provide someone a nice dinner when they want it. My plan (and I use that word loosely, lol) is to stagger breedings and have two or three does kid every month or so but not going into July like I did this year...

I did it! I finally put a boy goat with some girl goats. He's only 5 months old, but he sure thinks he knows what he's doing. One tiny oops though.... I totally forgot that one of the does is his mother, and she's crazy, and I can't catch her to take her out. Oh well, I'm not terribly worried about it - kids will most likely be sold for meat anyway. Still have some different pairings in mind, but I'm going to space 'em out a little bit. Kids from any breedings right now will be February babies - brrrrr!
How cold is BRRRR???? Aren't you in TX?????

LOL - well I am in Texas....south of Houston. But I'm acclimated to this weather so anything below 50 is BRRRR to me!

Our coldest weather is in February. We've been known to get down in the 20's and occasionally lower - rarely - but it happens. We're just not set up for that kind of weather here!

Okay, I do get it. It is easy to acclimated to temps and then a change and you do feel it. I could probably never go back to New England and the cold up there. Va is cold enough.... luckily it doesn't last as long as further north.

Yeah -- 2 weeks and I'm DONE with it. Northerners spend 6 months in it and seem "ok"..... :eek:o_O:th

I believe some areas in TX had almost 4 days of 20-30 last year -- maybe a snowflake......but they did have actual snow a couple yrs ago, like 2" or so. Dramatic.

Shouldn't tease because we had no more than a flurry last year and less than 1" for two yrs prior.......I am DREADING a catch up! We have had over a foot a couple times in past 10 yrs. Cold & snow are NOT for me. Not for my area either. Since we have little snow we have little equipment beyond snow plows on the salt spreaders. We do get some icy conditions more often.....salt helps that.

I don't blame you!

I occasionally watch a "reality" program about Alaska. I could NEVER do what they do. They live through temps of 50 - 60 below 0. Nope - not for me!

We've had hellacious heat here this summer - but that's what AC is for! Without it, we would simply melt away.

Every four or five years or so we have a really hard winter. I actually don't mind it so much (except for hating the cold) because it really helps with the garden pests. We barely had more than a light freeze last winter. I must be totally crazy to wish for a couple of hard freezes...

We didn't get real cold last year, will probably have snow this winter. Yes, we get snow, it hangs around 2 or 3 days, then melts and is gone. Texas knows how to throw a Snow Party! We are idiots, drive too fast and have wrecks. Us personally, we stay home and let the idiots have at it. I can't imagine living in snow for months at a time!

Separated the last born kid from his mama Tuesday evening. Tried milking the mama yesterday morning... and it went...ummm....ok. But today she was really understanding that getting on the milk stand means more feed and a lot of relief. She has a lopsided udder because her kid never understood there were two faucets - but she's milking pretty good out of that one side. Being half Nubian she's got a fine, soft udder and decent teats. I've milked her by hand both times - so far. I'll introduce the machine in a couple of days because my right hand is not fond of milking anymore. But, I guess if worse comes to worse I can milk her one producing udder half with my one good hand lol.

erm, we don't usually live in the snow... :)

the first few snowfalls up here there are usually a lot more wrecks until those that need to be weeded out get that done.

i prefer to not drive at all in the winter, but i've done plenty of it and know how to do it.
