My silkies absolutely love zucchini. Especially the ones that get big enough to have mostly formed seeds. They fight over the seeds then devour the rest. The large fowl aren't very big fans. I planted extras last year just for them.
Zucchini is a weird plant. Look there's a tender little zucchini that maybe I should cut off the vine. Come back tomorrow and that little zucchini is a giant zucchini.

Tomato seeds have sprouted. 1 flat of beefsteak, 1 flat of Rutgers, 2 flats of Amish Paste. I couldn't imagine the price of buying these as seedlings at the farm store.

My wife cans a lot of tomatoes and salsas.

Peppers have sprouted :) they are usually a good 2 weeks behind tomatoes and they acted the same this year. I recall reading that a temp between 80 ~ 90 degrees Fahrenheit needs to be maintained at all times for pepper seeds to germinate. And it could take up to 6 weeks for the pepper seeds to germinate. I don't recall ever having to wait 6 weeks though.

1 flat of green bell, 1 flat of red bell, 1 flat of jalapeno, 1/2 flat of chili and 1/2 flat of banana. 1 flat or 72 cells is usually more than enough for a 50 foot garden row. Plus being able to give some away to family, friends, neighbors.

Well that's it, my seed shelving is now full, with 12 flats. Everything else is direct sow. Just waiting for spring now 👍

Again being able to start your own seeds is a big $$$ saver.

I start my seeds on the back of my pellet stove. Tomato seeds take 5 to 7 days normally. I start the bell pepper seeds one week before the tomato seeds. They normally take from 10 to 14 days to germinate.

I start my own seeds not to save money but rather because it is the only way the varieties I want are available to me.

Sad day for tomatoes over here though... Yet another decree. There shalt be no more than 2 tomatoes growing per cell from this day hence forth. Serious though, you gotta thin them out. For them to grow tasty tomatoes this summer 😋
