It got down to 17 at some point in the early a.m. Went out to coop and waterer was frozen. I even put a salt water filled bottle inside. Guess that doesn't work. Had to come back up to the house to get a bowl of warmer water to set in their run.
Was the waterer froze up solid or ice thin enough to peck trough?

I didn't have any crumbles for the baby chickens and I didn't want to buy 50 lbs for just 7 babies. So I'm giving them 1/2 and 1/2 of layer pellets and commodity (cattle feed). I'm running through a hand grinder to make my own crumbles. Those baby chickens are super active... I think I may have jacked them all up on molasses contained in the commodity. They sure are eating a lot of it.

Ofcourse Bear my wife's male rottweiler thinks he's "Momma Bear". Anytime those baby chickens get to chirping he jumps up and runs to the brooder tub to check on them. He even came and got me once whinnying because one of the babies had a feather stuck to it's beak and the other babies were chasing it around cutting up a fuss. He's a good momma 🤣

I was reading up on these leghorn chickens, good fliers roost in trees - uggg...

because they are young, and their throat's are so small, grind extra fine, and pit sand in a small dish so they have grit

Its a larger one of this brand. It was solid down in the rim where they drink.
We have the screw lid kind 5 gallons but I can't see where that would make any difference. We also have 4 pint salt water bottles filled to the brim so they sink in ours. The waterer didn't even freeze solid when we got into the single digits. The tray did freeze, but it was a thin enough layer that was easy for the chickens to peck through. Sorry didn't work for you :(

Had to go into town for Farm Babe, what a icy mess... Hiway that is normally 65 MPH was 30 MPH and I have 4WD with good mud tires. Some people don't understand what it takes to drive on ice, I seen way to many skidding around. Glad to be back home, don't plan on going back out unless someone calls me for help, then I'll go back out.

Winter storm warning has extended until 9:00 AM tomorrow morning.
