What did you do in your garden today?

Thats sad I have been wondering about sunchokes, did you like them?
I thought my new asperigus had all died from our crazy winter, but now 9 out of 10 have sprouted so I'm pleased.

Do not eat a lot at once unless you like stomach upset. They are mostly inulin. Some is very good for you. Can eat raw or cooked. I scrub the peel off with a stiff brush and slice for salad sometimes. Crunchy and a little sweet.

Leaves are used as a livestock fodder. They actually produce a lot of stem and leaf. The deer reallt liked that.

Anyone tried growing and drying all your own beans? About how many plants do you need per person for a twice a week serving??

i grow as many bean plants as i can get planted and keep alive, not only for dry bean production but also for fresh and shelly beans. i also usually grow some peas.

we cook a lot for other people so when i make beans i'm usually making 4-6 gallons of beans at a time. i can't usually grow enough beans for that much cooking but Mom will buy our local most common beans which are normally available called Great Northern Beans (a medium sized white bean) or Navy Pea Beans (a smaller white bean) and then i'll add some of the ones i've grown for variety's sake.

i could eat beans every day, plain and with butter is a pretty common way i have them, but we also make burritos and baked beans or bean soups.
 
Mom has really got into lentils now. She didn't realize they stabilized blood sugars. I'm glad because it's so much better than the medicinal herbs she wanted to try.

has she ever tried adzuki beans? i think they are similar in texture and flavor to lentils. i have yet to find many beans of many kinds that i don't like. :)

She has some issues with beans (both new and old world types) and her blood sugars. Lentils are different
